Any tips on verbal reasoning test?

Hi, I just found it's really difficult for me to survive in a verbal reasoning test, cos I am not native English speaker and probably I have poor logic ability? Although I have done some practices from SHL, I thought the real ones were more complicated. I passed all the numerical tests and logic reasoning but failed all the verbal ones, could anyone give me some advice? Thanks

I know this is obvious and maybe a little insulting but practise, practise, practise!!! GMAT questions may help?

Every time when I practise for verbal on SHL site, it always 60% achieved and I don't even know which one is right and which one is wrong, what a shame.

Any one know what percentage I need to achieve? 85% or 90%

I'm not even sure its that high tbh. I don't know the exact percentage but on some of the tests (grad applications) I have done I have achieved less than 85%, 90% and still got through to the competency questions etc.

As far as I know, it's around 70%, or at least that's the only number I've ever got any Bank to tell me

I did the SHL practice one on their website and got in the high 60's, however I still managed to pass the BarCap verbal reasoning test so maybe the boundaries arent that high after all.

I always find the easiest thing is to read the question first and focus on finding the answer in the text. Don't ever read the whole text first it takes too long! Try practising at a slower pace with a dictionary by your side and look up any words you dont understand, then build up the speed.
the words are rarely difficult, its usually the structure of the passage that is confusing.

IMO its best to read the passage first, sometimes the questions deliberately ask for questions combining two instances in the passage which may be hard to miss if you haven't read the entire thing.

Yeah thats true its much better doing it like that... In my opinion reading the whole passage then answering the question just confuses you!

the problem with these tests is that there is almost always a good reason to select "Cannot say", but weather this is the right answer or not depends on what you assume about the text i.e is the text current? just because something is not explicitly stated, does that make it untrue? etc. It almost seems that weather or not you pass these tests is completely arbitrary. sometimes I come in the top 5th percentile, sometimes in the bottom 20. Does anyone know what assumptions you are to make outside of what the passage explicitly states by either fact or contradiction?

really pisses me off

75-80% is definitely enough. I did a sample test on shl.com and got something around that score, and I have never failed a single verbal test

You could just pay someone to do it for you.

I consistently get 90-100% on all SHL tests... just saying.

I really struggle with knowing that too.
I always get confused as to me you can make a reasonable conclusion - but to me this is different to saying definate - Often a reasonable conclusion means that yes its reasonable but i cant say for definate so would need further information to say for definate. But they are two different answers so i never know which to click.

Im really confused
Any help would be much appreciated

ALSO
If there is no reference in the text is it False - as its not a reasonable conclusion to make from the text you are provided with OR not enough information :s-smilie:

Can anyone let me know if any sites i can pratice on., I have done the SHL one.

Thanks
