I am thinking of taking standard catered accommodation. It would cost £5300 a year. I am eligible for £7000 maintenance loan. Would I be allowed to use the £1700 to spend on equipment, clothing and social activities? Or would I not be allowed to use it and then end up having to work longer hours?

Once you get the loan that's your money and can spend it whichever way you want to but if money is a big issue I'd recommend applying for a bursary from your university.

The maintenance loan is for all your living costs, accom, food, etc... The excess after accom you can spend on whatever you like, it is your money.

Do anything you like with that £1700, it's yours, as mantinace loans are paid into your bank account.

The loan is paid termly. Split like this: 33/33/34.

You can do what you like with the money - But you need to budget and make sure you can pay your rent first!

Also, what @Elitefast said is good advice - A lot of universities these days have means-tested bursaries (free money, pretty much) based on household income. If you gave consent for Student Finance to share your details with your chosen university, then it should be an easy process to claim the bursary.
