Hello. I'm an international girl interested in studying music production, starting in sep '18. Unfortunately, I'm a self-taught, playing piano and mixing in daw a bit. I've been thinking 'bout Edge Hill, Keele or Falmouth Uni but honestly have no idea which one to choose. Any advice?

What sort of music production are you interested in? Popular music or film/tv/theatre production?

For the latter LCC and Central are worth a look.

London Met has a ropey reputation for most subjects but has an enormous number of music production students.

Surrey's tonmeister course is very heavy on the physics. Same with acoustics and music at Southampton.

The universities you've mentioned aren't particularly well known for their music departments. That doesn't mean that the courses are bad but it's worth looking into the details about what you'll study, who will teach you, the facilities available and what contact with industry you'll have.

The other alternative provider to look at would be BIMM - if you want to be surrounded by musicians and be trained by professionals then they're worth investigating. You wont have a traditional university experience though.

My son is a self taught guitarist who is interested in music production but does not have any formal music qualifications. This limited the Uni's he could apply to this year. He applied and was offered places at University of Gloucester, UCLAN (Preston) and University of Northampton. I think the University of South Wales (Cardiff) also has a course. He didn't want to go to London so I don't know about the London Uni's. There is also BIMM which has colleges in Bristol, Manchester, Brighton, London and Berlin.

The facilities at UCLAN and University of Gloucester were excellent and Northampton was good as well.

Good luck!
