i can't sleep

Hi,

It's always taken me a long time to sleep but since I've started uni it's gotten worse, it takes me hours to get to sleep. Last night I lay in bed for over 6 hours trying to sleep and because I only got a couple of hours sleep I ended up nodding off and being unable to concentrate in my lecture.

I often miss them because I'm to tired to go and I am seriously behind.
To make matters worse the person in the room above me plays music extremely loudly and all hours. I've told my resident tutor but she didnt seem to care.

Even if theres no music I can't seem to turn my brain off, if that makes sense. I don't even think about important stuff. I'm having problems again tonight I've been trying to sleep since about 10.

Music has been playing and I know this sounds stupid but I've been crying for the past half our out of stress, my eyes are so red and itchy.

has anyone else had this problem, or know how I can deal with it

I'm sorry about that. I've sometimes struggle sleeping, this week especially. My brain is like mush now. I'm also well frequented with the painful eyes and nasty feeling it brings about. It often feels like torture.

You should consider trying Nytol or something. Just don't become too reliant on it obviously. Also I find I can get myself into a kind of "peace" when trying to get to sleep, whereby I try to clear all the thoughts racing about in my head and just have..blank. It seems to work. If I were you I would go and have a word with the musician upstairs, and just politely say look Its really not on that you play music in to A.M. You should not have it upset you to the point of tears.

It's not unreasonable to lay off the music in the early hours for gods sake, thats what headophones are for. He/she can play it all day if he likes.

try something with melatonin in it. the body produces it naturally. It works pretty well. I got my bottle from GNC. and i'm taking one tonite.

Try taking Kalms or something like that, you can get them in the health food store. Drink Chamomile tea. Get earplugs, although I can't really sleep with them though lots of people can. Take a walk before you go to bed the fresh air and excercise helps a lot. Make sure you stick to a regular routine and go to bed at the same time every night, it's really important to have a regular sleep pattern.

If all that fails then go and see your doctor, he/she will be unlikely to prescribe you sleeping pills in the first instance though.
