I work at a fast food joint and very often we get customers with receipts coming in the next day saying 'the chicken was cold and the gravy was spilt bla bla' and the manager just gives them free replacement order. Thing is it's like impossible for the chicken to be 'cold' because we literally keep it in a hot heat rack thing. Could these customers be coming in for free food or what?

If there was something wrong with the food, they would complain there and then to get more instead of starving and waiting until the next day....so yeah, I think that they're trying it on

I'd require some proof of that ... such as bringing in the food immediately and showing that it's cold/spilt/etc. Is it usually the same person coming back or what?
