Hi! So I'm going for an interview at Magdalen College - i applied for History. Who else is going for a history interview?

What kind of things they usually ask in history interviews? I listed about three history books that i've read in my Personal Statement so I gues i should reread those....haha. Oh and i should probably re-read the written work i submitted.

Anyone else have any questions/answers about the history interviews or history in general?

Hey piratemonkey! Also going for a History interview - mine's at St. Johns.

About to look through a couple of books that I have made reference to in my personal statement, but I have my timed exam for an Individual Assignment a few days after interview - so there's just not enough time to read everything I want for both!

For interviews in general, when do people think you should buy train tickets for? The letter mentions how they could let you go after anything between one day and four, so I don't know when to book my return journey for?

get an open return? it will cost more but it is oxford after all. i knew someone who applied a few years back, got an interview, went home early and then was called back. get an open return.

haha that's horrible!

So if they're done interviewing you will they actually tell you that you can leave or will we all have to wait there till saturday afternoon?

Reply 44

i imagine that they will tell you if you need to stay for an extra day or whatever when you are down there.

Reply 45

oh ok. I hope they do that! It would be so frustrating to sit around staring at a bulletin board all day waiting for your name to come up....and for it to never appear....

I'm so excited to see Magdalen! It looks so pretty in all the pictures! I've never been to Oxford before!

Thanks house sparrows - most definitely would not want to have the same happen to me as your friend!

hey guys, i have a history interview at st hugh's. according to an email I got, i am supposed to be there by 4th Dec, but then it vaguely mentions the date until i am required to stay- 8 th Dec. It is a problem for me as i need to book the plane tickets, and cannot change the departure time afterwards. Do you think i should make a reservation for the 5:40 pm flight from London on 8th Dec. But then, I would need to leave Oxford at about 11 am which sucks as I may be called for interview at 2 pm or smth...Alternatively, I could book the 9th Dec morning flight, bu then again, will they allow me to stay in college for a night longer?

I will email them on Mon, just wanted to know whether anyone has been in a similar situation before and are they reasonably flexible over this issue?

cheers, and good luck with your interviews

Basically what will happen is that you'll have interviews 5th / 6th and then the rest of the time is if other colleges want to interview you and so on. On the one hand it's very unlikely they'll need you til the 8th, but on the other is that a chance you're willing to take? Whether or not they can accomodate you for another night depends very much on the college - at Jesus it's near on impossible as we're already renting space from other colleges for applicants but at Hugh's you might be ok. When it's a case of flights they will be flexible if they can.

Like Boo says, you'd best not risk the (admittedly small) chance that you won't be needed on the last day of interviews. Book your flights for the whole period, and if you are told you're no longer needed for interviews before the day of your return flight, then be a tourist for a day or two. There are plenty of B&B's in Oxford (the YHA or the backpackers' as a last resort) even if the college has no room for you. It could even be fun!

Hi!

I've been called for interview at Merton and I was wondering, are there normally interviews on the first day or is it more a sort of 'settling in' time? Also, does anyone know hoe modern language interviews usually are? I mean, when I got my letter, I had a very detailed description of how the Englihs interview would work but what happens in a mod lang one? Will I get a text as well? And how often do they mention work submitted - is it usually in the context of how it could be improved or...?

Congratulations to everyone on here who has an interview!

Right need to ask bout my interview times

Been given an interview at my chosen college just before lunch, then my second interview a very short time after lunch. The letter also says I can have lunch free at the first college, but from what ive gathered i wont have time to eat my lunch, otherwie I will be late for my second interview:mad:

Does this mean I will not be able to have lunch and am expected to eat either before the first or after the last??

Be hardcore and miss dinner, it won't kill you. If you're nervous you probably won't even be that hungry either.

Gosh you know your interview time already? I have to report to the "Quarrel room" at 10 o'clock Monday morning so I suppose they'll tell us there!

Reply 55

well on the original interview timings sheet they gave us it said for my subject to arrive 10am on monday... and I got told in my letter to arrive at 9am for a 10am interview  so I'm going the night before... but very nervous! I'm really worried I'll forget all the basic scientific theory etc :frown:

Yeah, Magdalen didn't give me specific times for my interviews either. I have to be there at 8pm on December 4th and I'm assuming that is only to check in/get my room keys, etc. My friend is going for an interview at Cambridge and then gave her the exact time for all 3 of her interviews. It's going to be nerve wracking to have to check the bulletin board every few minutes.

Oh, and i have exams the monday after my interview.

Mid-year exams + Oxford interviews = total stress

Hey,
I'm going to arrive at Exeter the night before as well! I wonder if they'll have things planned.
I received the e-mail interview letter, but haven't received all the extra stuff in the mail since I'm in U.S. now.
Can the people who are going to Exeter tell me what extra stuff came in the mail? Did they give you guys the specefic times for your interviews?

Hey, I'm not a History applicant (I'm an English one) but in the mail we just got an invitation for interview which asked us to come on the 3rd at 10.00am and the English tutors will explain what will happen to us in the "Quarrel room". We haven't been given any times or anything yet, we have just been told we may be required until Wednesday and should stay until 2pm Tuesday 4th

Yup my letter just said to report to the porters lodge no later than 9am on monday, and that my interview would be at 10am.
