I moved away from Japan to the UK when I was 7 years of age & with no one speaking Japanese to me I quickly learnt English but with doing so I lost my first language.

I'm almost 19 now and I've attempted to learn Japanese multiple times but on every occasion I've ended up getting mad at myself for not understanding or even getting frustrated at my Dad when he tries to teach me, I am currently in Japan and even now I'm struggling.

I'm posting to see if anyone else has experienced/experiencing this and if anyone has any knowledge about mental blocks of this case - anything would be appreciated.

It's very difficult to be taught by a parent, as the teacher-pupil dynamic endorses their superior experience and authority just at the time when you're trying to be respected as a mature adult. Can someone other than a family member teach you? Although that scenario might be regarded as costly, if it helps you to meet your objective effectively, then it's money well spent.

I've grown to understand this but not why, are there any theories you could suggest for me to research? As I am in the country now ( after 2 other trips ) I feel that this is not quite the problem anymore - it's more the fact there is something that I have experienced e.g. the trauma of being torn from the country/family and maybe a culture sock.

My aim for this trip was to learn Japanese but I didn't expect this issue, now my aim is to figure out why I cannot unlock my 1st language - again, are there any theories you could suggest or even your own thoughts?
