::Weird Question Alert:: How do you even make friends with other people at hostels? Do you just start talking to people and hope that they want to hang out with you too? Baffled.
It was pretty much only ever a question of saying hi, introducing myself, and then asking people about themselves. Your room mates are the easiest though obviously if you walk into a room with a bunch of folk already acquainted it's a bit daunting but you just have to dive in with a smile on your face and say hi before you have a chance to over think it.

Some hostels also organise activities to get people interacting. If you're ever in Melbourne, then Base in St Kilda was awesome for that.

People travelling are mostly a friendly bunch. I went solo but I got invited on tons of things with groups that I met. I ended up living with 3 of the girls I met in one hostel in a house share they found they needed an extra person for, and we'd only known each other a week at that point.
