I have completed my AS levels and I am wondering is work experience related to engineering vital to put on my personal statement. I have struggled to find a single place where I can carry out engineering work experience. I applied to several companies back in January such as Rolls Royce, Williams F1 and Nuffield Foundation but I was rejected by all. After Exams I started contacting other companies but it has not been a success.
The only work experience I have is at a Garage I worked at 3 yrs back. I guess I could somehow fit that into my statement. However, this is the only hands on experience I have had.
Also, is there any books related to Mechanical Engineering that anyone would recommend that I can read over the summer?

No it's not necessary when applying to Uni, it will be a lot more important when you try to get jobs. You should have a passion for physics and mathematics ideally. Just make your personal statement stand out with any thing you've done.
