UCAS is rubbish!

Why do we all have to go through this UCAS rubbish?

I scored 298/300 in French and 300/300 in German AS. Why can't they just list the 600 odd modern language applicants in rank order according to their AS marks, and choose the top 150? Then they could set me an offer of say three subjects above 550/600?

As someone who has aced (sorry to be arrogant) their exams it's really annoying to be placed on a par with those who score 240s and 250s. I did so much better than they did, and yet Oxbridge don't seem to give a damn. Let's go back to the days when 3 As virtually guarenteed you an Oxbridge place, rather than it being the norm that it is today.

Wow I'd get a doctor to have a look at that chip on your shoulder.

The obvious thing to do would be to apply to Cambridge where (rumour has it) you may be asked your UMS grades.

Because they don't go purely on academic ability - hence the reason why they interview.

Because you, dear, are proving that you are good at sitting exams, not that you're intelligent. Unless of course all your papers were synoptic, which I seriously doubt.

Do you think you're the only one who does well in exams, or something?!

Because exam results aren't everything. Decent universities want people who are not only intelligent, but willing to learn, not people who do well in exams and think they know it all already (and you seem to fall more into the second category than the first).

And in the old days, much fewer people sat A-levels, and there were fewer universities. That's why people getting 3A's were pretty much going to be Oxbridge-bound.

Damn rite. All those VOID, NULL A levels (they know who they are!) media studies, sociology, physcology and all that crap should be exterminated. no wonder everyone gets A's!!

the people who do these silly, sorry excuses for A levels, in BULK should be made to state loudly what they got their nice little AAA in and then thisll differentiate from those hard workers who sat maths, physics, chemistry etc!

Erm, it's stated on your UCAS application what you get your results in (mainly because it would be daft for a uni to give, for instance, a place for French if a candidate has AAA in Maths, further maths and physics without knowing what the candidate has studied and just thinking he/she has AAA). Kind of VOID, NULL's your argument. Sorry.

Yeah, coz Maths, Physics, Chemistry etc. would be so useful for all those students coming to study SPS, English Lit, History... Sometimes these "sorry excuses" for A-levels might actually be helpful for an Arts degree, or they might (God forbid!) actually interest some people?

Having high UMS in AS-levels hardly makes you a contender for the Nobel prize! Lots of people ace their As-levels.
I got 300/300 in my Eng Lit AS and nothing lower than 289 in all my other subjects. I applied to Cambridge, got asked for my UMS scores, and got rejected after interview  (I went on to get straight As in my A-levels with my lowest mark being 552/600).
It's not just high UMS that Oxbridge & the like are looking for though - it's potential to do well on a very very different course.
Interestingly, my sister's said that the people with the highest A-level scores in her year at uni seem to more often be the ones struggling, whilst the ones who scraped their grades have flourished.

Yeah- high UMS scores just prove that youre good at learning stuff and spewing it out again in the exam, its not necessarily a measure of how bright someone is.

Not even that, all it means is you scored well in those particular papers. Big deal!

Cambridge could get a person with 12 A* GCSE's, 5 A grade A Level predictions, great personal statement and then at the interview feel that you were too boring to be on the course, or that you didnt really want that course as much as other people who have less academical achievements! Afterall, go on the cambridge website and look this up for yourself- there is a way to apply for cambridge if you dont have good grades- but if you show a willingness to learn and total dedication and enthusaiam for the course! Now if that isnt showing what their main assesement points are- then god knows what is!

This is a quote from an application form that i was sent by Cambridge:

"However, Admissions Tutors are aware that some applicants may not be predicted such high grades, but will nevertheless have the potential and the motivation to follow a course in Cambridge successfully."

And before anyone says anything- of course i still believe you have to be academically suited to go there- im just saying they look at a lot more.

Well done with your exam results. That really is wicked....but have you not thought that for some people there are very good reasons why they didn't do as well as you? I got 277/300 in my psychology AS whcih isn't quite on par with your results admittedly but I had to teach myself nearly the entire course. I have also had several teachers in other subjects who have been unable to speak English properly! I got four middling A grades but I had to cope with a hell of a lot of shit (most of it due to my shitty school) to get there. Point made!

Yeah...this is a point I feel I simply MUST make....there are two people in my drama class who do maths, chemistry and biology as their other three...they got a FAR worse grade in Drama than in their other three subjects....so there!
