I'm starting an Access to HE course this year to hopefully get on a social work degree next year. I'm looking to get some volunteer experience this year and just want to be pointed in the right direction. Could I actually call up local social services offices to ask to volunteer?

I did an access course last year (Just finished) in Health and Social care to go and do a branch of Social work course to eventually become a Social worker. At the same time I volunteer/ed with the Royal Voluntary service. The RVS is AMAZING experience. Another thing I did was volunteer at a memory cafe for people with Dementia. Google dementia groups in your area and you will find something. I also volunteered at a Care home during the summer. Not for personal care but for people with dementia/alzheimer's and some with schizophrenia. I basically helped plan activities for the residents to participate in and worked with people through their hallucinations. It was incredible experience. Ring up care homes, social work offices, memory cafes, homeless shelters, everything. The more experience you have, the better.
