Please help me make sense of this statement !

Okay I'm doing why do people watch horror films for A level media in a essay, apparently Freud believes this is a reason but I do not really understand it so if anyone can explain it in simpler terms I will be very appreciative
To Freud horror was a manifestation of the “uncanny,” reoccurring thoughts and feelings that have been repressed by the ego but which seem vaguely familiar to the individual.
The ego represses these unsettling things and elements so you are not conscious of them and they don't bother you in everyday life. However when watching the film, though you still cannot consciously access the repressed material, things including these elements are played out on screen and they seem familiar to you (without being able to put a finger on them) as well as spooking you out.
If you need more help, let me know.
