Smells Like Teen Spirit...1 of the worst lyrics ever

I know there is a chance a lot of people will send hate feeds my way but anyway, ill post it, Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit has 1 of the worst lyrics ever.

I heard it on tv for the 1st time in 9 years and I finally found out the lyrics and was shocked by how bad they were. Dont get me wrong, the instrumental is great as is Cobains voice but the lyrics were just awful. Theyre so apalling id go as far to say the weird al version (smells like nirvana) had much better lyrics.

Dont get me wrong, Nirvana is a great pioneering band who influenced so many acts (I still view Cobain's / Nirvana's final song before Cobains death - You Know Your Right as 1 of the best grunge songs ever) but with age comes a point wher you realise that things you liked as a teenager arent as great as you remember.

And which lyric is that, specifically?

Tbh I'd agree with you ahaha

It refers to a gig they played in front of a bunch of school kids who weren't interested, and ignored them.

The girls were wearing a cheap schoolgirl perfume by the name of Teen Spirit.

Western music died out mid 2000s tbh. Sure there are a few tracks here and there that grabmy attention but im not a fan, heck Ive spent more time listening to jrock since I left for uni 8 years ago than western mainly due to how bad western music has become.

The last part of the chorus doesnt make sense. In fact the whole song seems confused but the last part of the chorus bugs me. also it has kinda has racist undertones (an offensive term for mixed race people, an albino, a mosquito, my libido?)

I should change it to "to me western music died out". What I meant is a lot of acts started to feel repeptitive and got fed up and wanted to hear new things. Im sure theres a lot of good new artists out there but Im more or less fed up and really hate listening to radio stations (in fact I mainly listen to 5 live these days whilst driving).

before anyone mentions kerrang, theyre literally repeating songs I heard 10 years ago in high school :|

So? Songs don't stop being good because they're old. Johnny B. Good will always be a classic. A lot of The Beatles' stuff will always be popular. They're not going to stop being played.

Having said that, I've never got the hype about Nirvana, Smells like teen spirit, or grunge generally. All sounds crap.

without grunge, bands like foo fighters, linkin park wouldnt be around. Also a lot of alternate bands who came up in the late 90s owed a lot to nirvanas (and faith no mores styles). I agree with your 1st point however but everyone has their own views on music and some people get fed up of repeating the same thing over and over again

I thought it was about all the smack he was taking reducing his libido.

dunno how important it is that songs make sense tho...

I've no idea what this

means but I love it

whereas I understand completely what this song is about

cobain never really was that good of a lyricist. his vocal performance is what made him stand out.

Meanwhile Bob Dylan was a sensational lyricist but his voice was nothing special.
