If you could go back to university and start afresh, what would you do differently?

I only ask because I already regret how I spent my three years at university—and I graduated less than a month ago. If I could go back in time, not only would I study a different course altogether, I probably wouldn't have gone to the same university. There is so much I could have done that I didn't do: so many missed opportunities, wasted friendships, unnecessary hassles, etc.

If you could go back to university and start afresh, what, if anything at all, would you do differently?

In Clearing, only 2 universities offered me a place. I did my first year at one of them, and then ended up transferring into second year of the same course at the other university. The course content suits me a lot more here (Biology - much more ecology and zoology at this uni), it's a much nicer area, easier and cheaper commute, and nicer people.
If I could go back, I would have chosen this university when they offered me a place in Clearing. Just finished my second year now, and it was quite difficult to fit in because everyone had already established their friendship groups, and everyone already knew each other, so I didn't really make any friends this year.
Third year will easier since I roughly know everyone on my course by face now, but I think it's definitely too late to start making new friendships now. I'm very happy at this university, but I wish I had come here originally instead of transferring, for the sake of fitting in better.

Well it's great that your story seems to be on track for a happy ending! Which university did you go to before, and which one do you go to now?

I'm still at university (going into my final year), but if I could go back to first year I would definitely do things differently. I would have joined societies straight away, as I was too nervous to join any in first year and so I feel like I've missed out on so much fun and activities that don't just revolve around nights out. I would also join a sports team or club!

I spent the second half of first year pretty isolated because of mental health problems and anxiety that my flatmates were closer to each other than with me (pretty ironic because it made me spend less time with them pushing them further away), so I wish I had just made myself spend time with them regardless of my fears and gone out whenever they did, as they still always talk about memories that I hadn't joined in with in first year. I also wish I had gone home less often. In general, I wish I had appreciated and made the most of my first year because I could've had so much more fun.

Apart from that, I don't regret much in second year as I've joined societies and made a wider group of friends, as well as gotten closer to those friends I had in first year. I'm hoping that aside from the stress of a dissertation, third year will be even better.
If I could start again, I wish I never agreed to socialise with certain people on my degree course.

On the bright side, I cleared the waste and can comfortably focus on Year 3 with less drama

I would work harder in second year instead of chasing that glamorous but totally unsuitable boyfriend who everyone was rather astonished I went out with, but who ended up breaking his hand on my front door in a drunken rant to be taken back after we split up and then asking me to drive him to A&E the next day.

“And Friends. Do watch the people you make friends with, you’ll find you spend your second year getting rid of the undesirable ones you made in your first”.

I wouldn't have gone in the first place and saved myself a whole load of anxiety and debt.
I would have stood up to people much earlier than I did. I think most other things, I wouldn't change. Even though I had a very difficult undergrad experience, it's all character-building, yada yada
Given my state of mind I wouldn't have been able to do first year differently. I'd have to go back with my current one. But then without going through it all I wouldn't be so strong, so I wouldn't change how it went

In an ideal world:
Dump my nasty boyfriend straight away.
Ditch an old fake friend from sixth form.
I'd join a sports team from first year instead of second.
Don't waste time on certain people.
Make more of an effort to speak to other girls on my course. I only hung out with guys so now as a result I only have proper female friends outside of my course.
Live in a different halls of residence.
Read around the subject, not just core reading.
I am going back to university. In fact, right now it's looking likely I'm going to be at the same university again - just a different campus!

As for what I'm planning to do differently:

- not skip class.
- stay out of social drama.
- get involved in clubs/sports.
- actually do the required reading.
- aim for higher than just minimal passes on assignments no matter how much I may dislike them.
- not dating my classmates. Luckily the majority will be 7-8yrs younger than me anyhow so less temptation hopefully.
