Data logger?

So i was doing this past paper:
http://filestore.aqa.org.uk/sample-papers-and-mark-schemes/2016/june/AQA-PHYA1-QP-JUN16.PDF
mark scheme: http://filestore.aqa.org.uk/sample-papers-and-mark-schemes/2016/june/AQA-PHYA1-W-MS-JUN16.PDF

and the question i'm doing is asking about 'data loggers'? I've literally never come across a data logger before, never mind be able to say what it does or its advantages haha
i'm assuming the data logger is the big rectangle in the circuit diagram...

if anyone can explain a data logger to me that would be great
also, what's a potentiometer??? it says you need to include it for 6 marks? im so confused

A data logger is an electronic device that automatically measures voltage at specified time intervals and stores it in memory. typically you'd read it out into a spreadsheet after the experiment was over and do your analysis & graphing that way.

The rectangle in the circuit diagram is supposed to be the potentiometer. A potentiometer is a 3 terminal variable resistor, you can put the two end terminals of the track across a potential difference and adjust the wiper position to get any potential inbetween those two on the third terminal.
