Glandular fever - pain relief?

I was wondering if anyone (who's actually had glandular fever) could recommend the strongest and best pain relief, I got some Penicillin for it today but as for pain relief, none of the painkillers I've bought do any good. Yesterday I had a packet of Anadin Extra, today I'm on Nurofen. They're not taking the pain away and I havent eaten anything over the last 24 hours. I am soooo hungry, but I cant even manage a few sips of water without getting that "cheese-grater-against-your-tonsils" feeling :s-smilie:

Please, Im open to all suggestions!

Gargle (then swallow) soluble aspirin - dissolving it in slightly warm water makes it easier, I found.

There's some stuff called Difflam which you can get from the chemist; it comes as a spray or a syrup and that works really well.

Take ibuprofen regularly, 400mg three times a day, for best effect (as opposed to just taking it when it gets bad). Then, add co-codamol (paracetomol and codeine) as needed, up to 8 tablets a day. The strongest you can get without a prescription is Solpadeine Max but it costs more than the cheapo generic stuff.

As always read the packets etc., don't mix aspirin with ibuprofen, and don't take Co-codamol with anything with paracetomol in as you'd be ODing on paracetomol....

I shall give both of those a go, thankyou Helenia

If you're using soluble aspirin though, you can't use nurofen/anything with ibuprofen in. Paracetamol/co-codamol is fine though.

I used disperable co-codomal. This def helped. Eventually I ahd to have steroids to clear my glandular fever up. Its so horirble so I empahise with you

Well, I've just recovered from it and found that ibuprofen and paracetamol together, taken at the recommended doses, is the best pain relief. And that goes for toothache too.

I don't want to sound portentous and gloomy but I found that nothing worked when I had glandular, and that I've never felt 'right' since (this was back in year 10 - I'm now a second year undergrad) and have had full-blown relapses a couple of times. My best advice is to ask your GP or a pharmacist, as they should know a hell of a lot about medicines.

I don't think that's portentous, Will, a friend of mine developed CFS after getting glandular fever. Thankfuly, the majority of people who get it recover without issue; but in some people, the virus can trigger different conditions.

Wow, this isn't helpful but I didn't suffer from any pain whatsoever after I was first diagnosed.... guess I was lucky.... I know it's not pleasant though! Glandular fever screwed me over because I now count sleep as one of my favourite past times. :p:

Ibroprofen and paracetamol sounds like a good combo tho.

Soluble stuff is good if you're having a 'swallowing a golfball' day.... good old glands :p:

Oh dear - maybe I should have it looked at then. I understand that CFS is difficult to treat though.

I just stuck to difflam spray and soluble paracetamol. The spray is really good as it kinda numbs the throat making drinking easier.

i had it last year and was diagnosed the day before i moved to Uni and into halls for the first time, horrific times!!

doctor whacked me on steroids and co-codamol, sorry i dont know the doses etc, but that seemed to kick it in the head, mind you, it totally screwed me over at the same time, most spaced out week of my life ever! i remember sleeping, alot, and failing to eat at all, and waking up in the middle of the night choking myself to death, not pleasent, but it did pass, thankfully!

just try to stay positive, and eat soup! thats not too bad to swallow!

Anadin Ultra - combination of aspirin, paracetamol and ibruprofen all in one tablet. It was the only pill that helped me. Also, if you're not teetotal, drink hot lemon and honey but add a slug of whisky to it, the whisky acts as an extra anaesthetic, whilst the honey coats your throat. And water. Lots and lots of water. Warm flannels and scarves around your neck at all times.

Be patient and wait it out - hope you feel better soon! :hugs:

I seriously sympathises with you, I had it over the summer and it was the worst time of my life! As for the pain I didn't really get any relief from the pain, but maybe try gargling dissolved aspirin in water. get plenty of rest and hope you start to feel better soon

soluable paracetamol at quite a high does from hospital really worked for me and i also took a triangular pink dissolvable table (no idea of the name) that tasted awful but really worked. This was also prescribed for me by hospitabl- my glandular fever and tonsillitus was VERY sevre requiring 4 days in hospital.
And...get well soon! I know how horrible glandular fever is!!

Its the raised white lumps on my tonsils that are the worst. Can you actually scrape that stuff off?

Also, another thing. How long does it take to process a blood sample to test for the virus?

If it's your tonsils that hurt, get some Vicks 'Ultra Chloraseptic' and aim it at your tonsils - it's a local anæsthetic jet spray.
