No-one is taking criminology at the moment as it is a brand new degree being offered from this year! Thet means that I am afraid no-one will be able to help you much. However I do know that it is being run by the Sociology department and that it has evoleved ffom their existing syllabus. I have a couple of friend who studied sociaology and they really enjoyed it. But as to the course contenet etc I am afraid I dont know that much.
I thought it was new last year?

Sorry your right, still I have never met anyone doing it

In the first year, it's exactly the same as the sociology degree, with an extra module added one. You also have to do the same compulsory modules as Sociology in year 2 as well. I did two modules at the sociology department last year and they are jokers, really. Probably the only department in the university that would accept an essay if you wrote it on your hand.

Thanks KOBE89 for starting a Durham criminology thread.
I'm on a gap year at the moment and applying having done my A2s last year.
My other choices are Manchester x2 (for the Bsc and BAEcon course) and Cardiff.
Durham is by far and away my top choice, I don't really mind that the course is only a year old.
Just out of interest, how long did it take for your Durham AES track letter to come through? My application went off on Nov 19th and I'm still yet to hear from them.
Cheers.

You're welcome!

You are the only people that i have meet in the forum so far that is applying Criminology. I m glad to read your post.

I applied in early NOV and the letter arrived within a week but dont worry, the time may vary betweem different places as I m living in Bristol.

By the way, I have applied for Southampton, York, Cardiff and Leeds which have all given me the offers. How do you think I should choose from them?

The feeling is awesome that I finally meet one guy applying for criminology!

I would probably go for York if you are going to do anything Sociology related as their reputation for these subjects is generally better. You can get the module breakdowns at www.dur.ac.uk/faculty.handbook so if you haven't checked that out already, it might be useful.

And I do not personally study criminology, I do Combined. Like I said, I picked up two modules with that sociology department...I find sociology generally quite interesting, but I didn't think much of the teaching or department.

To be honest, the criminology degree appears to me as being abit half baked. One module in criminology in the first year really is poor when you consider so many good universities do proper criminology degrees that are steeped in both classical theory and modern content. Also, I have just looked at the course at York and lo and behold, it does seem to have alot of crime based modules (which all sound interesting).

The content of your degree is something to seriously consider. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Durham, but if you really want to do criminology and not sociology with an extra module, I would personally look elsewhere.

Well, you're right as I started realising that the content of the course in Criminology of Durham sounds a bit more like sociology which i perosnally dont prefer. And the content of the course in York has held a deep interest for me.

I personally love Durham as its reputation but consider with the course itself which I know is abosultely important, I might go for York. But anyway, I havent got an offer from Durham yet.

But thanks for your suggestions.

To DavidJohnRhys

I went for St Cuthbert's Society.

I have applied to Cardiff and got an offer already, as you said, ABB. Did they really need a AAA requirement last year? This is interesting!

However, Cardiff may not be a really good choice for me. I am an overseas student who come from Hong Kong and the reputation for Cardiff University in HK isnt really high.

I have got offers from Southampton, Leeds, York, Cardiff. Which one do you prefer and why? Coz to be honest, I personally dont really know about each universities even though I have worked hard in to the research for each uni.

Anyway, thanks again!

Kobe89 I would say York is streets ahead of your other choices in terms of reputation and facilities. Also, it's a nice little city as I think I mentioned in my last post. I still think Durham should edge it as your top choice(assuming you get an offer from there, fingers crossed)
I don't really know how you'd go about seperating Leeds and Southampton. I think they're both have similar, good reputations so you'd have to look at the course and facilities in order to come to a decision.
If you get offers from Durham and York, I'd have Durham as your firm and York as your insurance choice.

Got my first offer through today. Manchester BAEcon. HUGE relief.
Are you planning on visiting any unis before making your final choice? Probably quite hard logistically what with you being in Hong Kong!

Well, I am in UK right now doing Alevels so I will be able to visit some unis in UK. However, due to the reason that I live in Bristol, it's quite far away to get to York and Durham in a day which means I have to stay a night and makes it complicated for me.

What is the requirement for Manchester? I have once considered to apply there but I dont really like the place in Manchester as a foreign student.

Without doubt and I agree with you that Durham and York are gonna be either my firm and insurance choice. York has already given me an offer with conditional BBC and if Durham gives me ano offer, it's gonna be BBB typically.

I am still struggling with the decision as I like the course and the city more in York but the repuatation for Durham to be honest is street away from York.

ANYWAY, CONTRATS FOR YOUR OFFER FROM MANCHESTER!

Its probably worth coming to look round at some point though. If you get a Durham offer you will be invited to a post ap. Open day which will include accomodation overnight. Then you could visit york on the way up or way back as well. You shouldn't really go to move somewhere for 3 years without visiting first!

I have to apologise that I need to push this topic up again.

I have finally received an offer from Durham for my Criminology application. I really have no idea how to choose between York and Durham.

Durham to be honest is better than York in terms of the reputation but the course in Durham isnt really like Criminology but a sociology degree which I do not want to do.

I know the only thing I can do is to go for the open days but I would really want to know some more advice apart from open days.

THANKS!

Go to the open days. Obviously we here are all biased and love our uni, so we cant really be too objective. Really go for where you feel you will post enjoy your next 3 years.

My advice would be to go for the course that suits you most. It doesn't matter what the reputation of the uni is like if at the end you graduate with a crappy degree because you didn't really enjoy the course in the first place, and hence couldn't find the motivation to do the work.

Is the difference between York and Durham even that big? I would have said they are in the same pool, reputation wise.

Employers regard it as better, because of the collegate system that Durham has.

Hmm.
If I didn't come here, I'd have probably gone to York, I think.

im still waiting for a reply from durham, its the only one i havent got yet.

i rang up last week to check if something had gone wrong but they said its fine and they have my application they just havent finished giving out all places yet.

anyone else still waiting?

You'd wait slightly later this year than last year as the admissions tutor for criminology is on research leave abroad. But you should have heard by now. They gave me a very quick offer when I applied!
