Alloy Wheels help (VW Polo)

I am possibly gonna buy a car with standard wheels that I wanan repalce with alloys - both the rim and new tyres as well.

Question is - how do I know what SIZE alloys my car can take and how do I know which type to buy (i.e some alloys have 4 holes others have 6 etc)

Also - I wnat a TYRE that is fairly common and not to expensive to put onto the alloys - how do I know which types of tyres these are?

The car will look somehting like this:

Standard VW alloys look somethign like this

So I spose I cna only get the ones with 4 hoels - but what sizes etc?

Wil lthere be any better eprformance if I get bigger tyres? Is it possible with this car? (i.e are they already on with the biggest tyres they can have?)

am not sure about what am gonna say don't take my word for it but i reckon you can put 15" alloy wheels on there.

There won't be any performance increase, if you fit bigger tyres you have to get your speedo/odometer reset.

If your current steelies are 15", then you could get 15" alloys no problem, if you want to get bigger, that is possible but you will have to get lower profile tyres.

For example, my car has 16" alloys (usually runs on 15s), but the tyres are Dunlop Sport SPs, 205/45/16R, which in English means £100/corner.

I doubt you are already on the biggest rims you can have, but i would stick with OEM alloys as they always look better than aftermarket rims.

What goes on there by default? I spose I need to look at the drivers manual or something if I buy it.

Not bothered too much baout putting bigger oenso n there if they have no performance increase..on my current Mazda I went for bigger and fatter tyres and the difference in (looks) and especially going round corners etc was noticeable.

Who can reset the speedo ? I assume tyre places can do that when they change tyres over?

I've done some quick research, apparently if you're going for larger tires there is a 3% tolerance if it exceeds that you'll need some other complicated stuff. This is my source http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=19557

Yes or a VAG garage.

Am I right in in understanding - when people get bigger alloys they compensate with thinner tyres?

Obviously they will have the legal tread - so is it really about looks/getting accuracy for speedo?

Will there be any major differences in standard wheel/fat tyre v big alloy/thign tyre?

I am guessing these thin wheels cost a lot mroe than standard tyresas they are rare?

That page reckosn the standards ar 13inches so I might notched it up to 14inches and leave it at that.

Low profile tyres are not rare per se, but they are more expensive, hence why my tyres are £100/corner.

The bigger the tyre, the greater the grip and thus the better handling you will get but also the more likely you are to aquaplane (small risk in reality).

I think you need to talk to a specialist as i don't know enough about this...or another forum!

your car will probableys take 17's no problem. as graham said, just make sure the outer radius is roughly the same otherwise the speedo will be out slightly. but a little bigger is fine as your speedo overreads anyhow.

as for performance, a bigger radius will reduce acceleration. lower profile will make it stiffer in the corners but give a harder ride. and the width will obviously give better traction in the dry.

i woudldnt go any bigger than 205 for a polo tbh. and 16's sound a good idea, although tyres for 17's are a bit cheaper due to popularity.

You need to know
a) bolt pattern
b) PCD
c) max / min offset / inset

You can go with larger rims if you reduce the tyre wall profile. So long as the rolling radius of the wheel remains the same or very close to standard you can avoid getting the speedo recalibrated.

As for tyres... I, like graham have Dunlop SP sports on each corner. However, on Race days i'm on BFG's @ £400 a corner. :frown:

a larger rolling radius needs more torque to achieve the same acceleration as you cover more distance per rotation. its like gearing it up.

also the only problem with a german ebay site is that they are most probableys in germany and P&P will cost a fair bit.

That car will have a pcd of 4x100mm

A sensible offset for a 6" wide wheel on that car would be et35

Some 15"x6" wheels with 195/50/r15 maybe 195/45/r15 tyres is your best bet.

I saw a VW golf fitted with alloys from a Bentley the other day
Are the PCD for golf's and polo's the same?

It looked pretty naff to be honest. The tyres were like rubber bands and the lip of the wheel was well past the tyre.
Its owner obviously couldnt park either as all 4 wheels were scuffed to buggery.

mk1,2 and low spec 3 golfs have 4x100 pcd.

high spec mk3 golfs have 5x100

mk4 onwards have 5x112 IIRC

polo mk1,2,3,4 4x100 mk4 high spec models may be 5x100, not entirely sure.

Wheels from other marques, especially big prestige marques is a big thing atm, along with the stretched tyres. Looks good in some cases, bad in others. I think my porka rims look good.
what does all this 4 5 x 100 mean?

Is 4/5x the number of bolts it can take??

just to make it more interesting, some of us run in imperial!
The B has a 4.5" pCD!

I have 16" Avon Rangemasters. £70/corner.

Bloody awful off road, good on. My dad likes them 'cause they wear well.

I'm gunning for some very chunky BFG's my mates 90 has on next time we need some....

BFG's are the ****!
I have a pair for the track. They smoke up nicely.
