Leeds or Surrey?

Hi, do you guys think that University of Surrey (Digital Arts) or University of Leeds (Digital Media) would be better? A guy who is studying at Surrey told me "Leeds is far from London where all the Media is based so studying there has no point". Does it really matter if you're close to London or not when you're studying such course? Please give me some reviews on these courses and universities since I'm so lost! I'm currently mostly interested in graphic and web design but I am still searching for myself so I really want to try out different types of media but be able to get decent skills.

Have you been to the open days?
Dont you think he might be a bit biased?
Contact the departments plus look at the web sites to see where there students go.

Hey @gintareek,

I was in your shoes not too long ago, trying to decide between a number of good unis.

I would recommend looking at the modules offered in each course, and comparing them to see which interests you more. You can find a list of the modules on the Digital Media Arts course page on our website, here. If you click on the module (underlined in blue) you'll be taken to a page describing that module  Leeds probably have the same set up on their website, so take a look and compare the courses.

It may also be worth taking into account whether or not you wish to do a placement year, and if so, do both unis offer that? Surrey's placement programme helps our students graduate with a year of experience already under their belt, and we have over 2,300 partners in industry across the world, so you could even gain international experience! Often, placement students are offered a graduate job at the end of their placement if they’ve impressed their employer. This really takes the pressure off in your final year as you can focus on studying for your exams and doing your coursework instead of job hunting.

Have you visited both the universities? If not, I would suggest having a tour around campus and exploring the local area to make sure you’d be happy to live in whichever place you intend to study at. We run weekly campus tours on Wednesdays which leave Senate House at 1pm and last about an hour. If you can’t make a campus tour, you’re free to come do a self-guided tour. In addition to that, if you’d like to speak to a member of the teaching team on the course then that can usually be arranged (depending on the academic’s availability). The facilities the university has are also important, especially for a degree in Media. At Surrey, we have some top tech to support your learning such as:

Specialised workstations for video games and digital media production

Cameras and edit suites for post-production work

Motion capture facilities

Broadcast television studios

Electronics workshops

Multiple performance spaces (the Lewis Elton Art Gallery, the Ivy Arts Centre, the Performing Arts and Technology Centre.

If you contact the Admissions team they’ll be able to put you in touch with an academic who will be happy to answer any questions you have about the course. You can email them on [email protected] or call +44(0)1483682222. I'm not sure if Leeds would do the same, but it's always worth dropping them a line to see

One of our Digital Media Arts students has written about her experience of the course so far here, which might be helpful too!

If you’ve got any questions about life at uni, the facilities, Students’ Union, and Guidlford in general then feel free to ask I was an undergrad student at Surrey from 2012-2015 and now I work at the uni and still live in the area

Hope this helps!

All the best,
Ashley
