Can anyone give me any information regarding the regulations governing who can donate blood in the UK? I've tried googling but all the sites appear to be about giving blood in America.

I used to work for the NBS and so long as you are over 17, are healthy, haven't had a blood transfusion since 1980, are heterosexual, over 7 stone 9, are not anaemic and illicit drug free you can ususally donate. there's a quick can I donate on the blood website (see LifeWired's post for address). YOu can also see how close to the wire our blood service runs - O neg is always in dire need.

As are platelets - if you can act as a platelet donor do it! Less invaisive than giving blood (platelets are collected by apherisis), you can also donate more regularly.
