Antidepressants???

I went to the doctor on Tuesday, because I was feeling really down and depressed. :frown: She said that I have depression and should think about going on an antidepressant. She said I'd be on them at least 6 months. She printed me off some info about depression and antidepressants, and also said she'll look into a mental health counseling group thing. I'm going back to see her next Tuesday, I need to decide by then what I'm going to do. I don't know what to do. I feel really bad and it seems to be getting worse every day. Are pills really the answer?

Anti-depressants aren't a magical answer, no. But they CAN really help- just to lift the 'blackness' enough to be able to use therapy/groups/whatever. Lift the cloud enough to be able to work through what's causing the depression- and sometimes, if it is caused by a chemical imbalance, then meds can do wonders.

I hope you feel better soon- make sure you talk to your GP about your anxieties over meds, find out more about which particular anti-depressant he/she would prescribe/what you can expect from it.

its all different for different people. pills are working for me but it doesnt work for everyone. you need not feel bad. things will improve slowly- consider all your options then choose as it is a bug decision, and if you have depression there is no reason to be ashamed . feel free to PM me

Some of them have ****ing appalling side effects, you feel dead inside, emotionless, you want to kill yourself, they can make horrible depression even worse.

I've tried 3 so far and none have worked, 1 made me feel a lot worse, 1 did nothing and 1 made me feel a bit worse. It's different for everyone though, you either take them and find out whether they work for you or you don't and never find out.

Go along with your GP's advice: as lil_danza put it, if it's caused by a chemical imbalance they can fix that; and if it's caused by other problems they can help sort your head out enough to get to the point where you can talk them through and seek some resolution.

Yes, there are side effects, but GPs only give them out if the benefits outweigh the potential side effects.

Anonymous user #2, sounds like you've been unlucky there. Have you seen a specialist, or just a GP? There are all sorts of options that GPs don't handle, they tend to stop at SSRIs and tricyclics, without looking at venlafaxine/mirtazapine/buproprion/adding T3/combination therapies/etc. Obviously,a GP can't be expected to deal with every medication for everything ever. But if you haven't seen a specialist, nag - they'll help you explore the options to find something that works for you.

I went on fluoxetine/prozac for about a year and a half and at the time i was determined they weren't helping, but in retrospect they really did.

Maybe give them a go, they may help if accompanied with some counselling - but you do have to stick at them for a while. Good luck, hope it all gets better for you - chin up x
