Based on academic profile, entry requirements and job prospects, I'd say:

Tier 1 - Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, St Andrews, Strathclyde
Tier 2 - Dundee, Heriot Watt, Stirling
Tier 3 - Edinburgh Napier, Glasgow Caledonian, Robert Gordon
Tier 4 - Abertay, Highlands & Islands, Queen Margaret, West of Scotland

(Tiers in alphabetical order)

This is a meaningless list. You have to look at the subject first, then decide how the courses and prospects compare across the universities. For mech eng or business Strathclyde is in the top tier. You also have to look at what sort of course suits your abilities as some courses are more practical than others, and you have to look at where you'd be happy living for 4-5 years. You want a course you'll be able to complete and get a good degree in and enjoy yourself whilst you're there. Life is short.

I’m doing it on reputation and prestige. If we’re doing by subject then QMU/RGU would beat St Andrews for nursing.
And there’s no argumebt that those two are better than St Andrews, certainly in terms of its academic prowess
