I am rereading book 1 and I have alreay noticed a few things.
    1. The Potters were attacked either on a monday night or tuesday morning. I think from all the descriptions that it is summer. Which would be why Dumbledore and McGonagol aren't at school.
    2. Dumbledore's watch at least partially tells time. He looks at it and then says "hagrid's late".
    3. There is no relation(at least not close) between Dumbledore and the Potters because when he is talking is emotions are conveyed like that of a person who lost a good friend not a family member.

Do any of the books ever say that Aberforth is still alive? If not then Dumbledore could be the only heir to Gryffindor. Also being the "heir" might not be hereditary. It might be like a feeling or attitude or whatever combination of qualities. If this was true the both Dumbledore and Harry could be the "heir" of Gryffindor.

Thats what I thought, not everyone in the family line has to be a heir but only those who are capable of such a title! its similar to wizard family's, not everyone born follows the family tree, u can have squibs and muggle-borns!

Even if Aberforth was alive, if he was younger, then Dumbledore would still be heir to Gryffindor, even if Dumbledore had children, being the Heir would not be passed on until Dumbledore's death.

Just re-reading book 4 again and noticed that Norbert is always mentioned, im pretty sure in all 5 books it is mentioned how Hagrid raised a baby dragon! I was thinking this could just emphasise the sort of animals Hagrid raises but why not mention animals like Fluffy or Aragog? anyone else think Norbert might play a part in future books?

1: How did u figure that out? (actually wondering lol)
2: Very good point. But what else is it for?
3: But even if you lost a family member, however one of them was able to defeat the worst wizard ever known, who ruled for 13 years, you would be very happy as well. Of course you would feel somewhat saddened, but not as much as if a family member just died.

Yeah, they mentioned it on the newsround website, and they said that the publishing company had dismissed this.

lol now that would be interesting. As to moncals question about aberforth being alive: When moody is showing harry the photograph, he says something like "Thats Aberforth, Dumbledore's brother. Only time i ever met him, strange bloke". Its hard to tell from what he said. However, it obviously depends on if you believe he works in the hogs head.
