    Hi,

How much work ex should I be doing in my gap year? How much do unis want so they know I haven't wasted a year? I was thinking two weeks to a month in a hospital and then usual care home and hospital volunteering alongside sports and stuff?

Anyone have any tips/experience? I'm unsure as to what they want.

What course are you taking? Why those areas of work?

    Medicine?
Sorry if it's obvious - there's no indicator while using the app.

Best idea, I think, would be to ask the school of your course at your chosen university for some places where they think would benefit you the most.

Do you already have some work experience? Typically med schools expect you to have a couple of weeks of hospital and GP shadowing plus a year or so of long-term volunteering. If you're taking a gap year you should do something medicine-related but there's no need to overdo it. In the end med schools don't really care what experience you have and how much you have it - the most important thing is having at least some and being able to reflect well on it.

Not wasting a year doesn't have to mean only doing medicine related stuff. Getting a job, traveling, reading and doing whatever else you enjoy can be really valuable experiences in terms of growing as a person, preparing you for life at uni and hopefully making you a better doctor at the end of it.

I took a gap year and none of the med schools I applied to were interested in what I was doing with it. (I already had some volunteering experience which I talked about during the admissions process.) I have a health care related job which has been a good experience, but I feel like the things I've done that have been most valuable for me have been things entirely unrelated to medicine.

Do you agree with the PM's proposal to cut tuition fees for some courses?
