okok, which are the top three colleges for maths at Ox. and Camb., with your reasoning. I'd be very grateful and in your debt (nothing pervy, mind!). You might even want to compare your Ox. and Camb. choices

Cheers

The only Oxbridge college which has got a really strong reputation for maths is Trinity. But it all depends what you're looking for, ie what kinda college you wanna go to. Like Trinity has the largest Oxbridge maths dept, but if you don't wanna be round loads of mathmos there's no point in applying there.

I want a really good college for maths, but also a good all-round college e.g. fun, academic, resources etc. etc. and I'm not sure whether it's going to be in Oxford or Cambridge, so I need options for both!!

Have you visited both?
I was having the same dilemma as you; I really didn't have a clue which to apply to, but then when I visited them both I made up my mind instantly. Oxford doesn't nearly have the reputation for maths as Cambridge, so if you want a really good college for maths then you probably ought to look at Cambridge, but thats not to say that a maths degree from Oxford is gonna look bad or anything!! I think both of them however will be able to offer you a "good all-round college"; they both seem to have tonnes of facilities etc. You might also wanna consider the cities; they are both so different. Oh and how different the courses are!

Well Camb's more applied, isn't it? But is the course THAT much better than Oxford's?

Getting into Cambridge will almost certainly be harder because of STEP. King's, Cambridge is the only college that doesn't ask for it, and they are flooded with applicants as a result.

Trinity, Cambridge easily has the best reputation for maths in the country, but that doesn't mean everyone would learn best there. Visiting is the only real way to find out whether you like it. If you're really bothered about prestige, which you seem to be, then that's the best place to apply.

i thought King's ask for STEP now?

They recommend taking STEP, but they don't make it compulsory.

Well, I want the best chance of doing well at maths, which is why I want a good maths college, not just for the sake of prestige alone :P

I know about Trinity, I wanted other choices too!! :frown:

But how come you're targeting Oxbridge specifically? There are other universities in the country that are very strong for maths, and you may find you like them more.

Teedy, you have two threads asking that same question (which colleges are best for maths), and when it's answered (trinity, merton, and it doesn't matter), you just repeat the same question. think of your behaviour as a FRACTAL , teedy, and try to escape!
Apart from the outstanding nature of Triinity, it doesn't matter. Visit them, read them, do the math, make a decision, be happy, cheers. Many many excellent students don't even get in. don't fret about the college.

Well I am targeting other Universities, but this is the Oxbridge Forum, innit? :P

I've been to Oxford and Cambridge, and I've studied general facts, and I think my preference will be Oxbridge...This isn't about 'general prestige' or applying to Oxbridge for the sake of it, I reckon the style of teaching and uni. life is wicked - I'm just trying to get some info. from those in the know...

Nevermind

hehe I can't help how people answer my questions  If you look, the original questiosn are linked, but not the same...Perhaps I'm not communicating well...Either way, I shall stop 'cause it's clear I'll have to do my own research

In one I wanted to know which colleges in particular are, if any, good for maths, which is pretty important if you wanna study maths...In t'other I seemed to recall that someone had said something about Christ Church and maths, and because I was interested in this combination, I asked if there was an issue...Like, I dunno, there's a freak thing where all the maths tutors are bastards...Or inept...lalalala

I'll go back into my dark corner then, shall I

If you want more college advice, say what else you would like in a college.

Well I want to involve myself in sports quite competitively, and have general fun, so I don't want a college that is work, work, work...But then again, I want a college with a good academic reputation, relative to Oxbridge, and for maths....Not asking for much, am I? I figure I might as well apply to the best college for me, because if they don't want me, another college might, if I'm good enough...

...But I think these people think I'm obsessed with the 'best' and going after the image...If that were the case, I would just be going after Trinity, now wouldn't I? :P Their logic is flawed!!!
