Say that 6+42=(a+b2)26+4\sqrt{2}=(a+b\sqrt{2})^2 then expand the RHS to get a2+2b2+2ab2a^2+2b^2+2ab\sqrt{2}

Then compare rationals and irrationals between the two sides to get 6=a2+2b26=a^2+2b^2 and 4=2ab4=2ab then just solve simultaneously for a,ba,b and so 6+42=a+b2\sqrt{6+4\sqrt{2}}=a+b\sqrt{2}

thx that was really helpful

It's perhaps worth mentioning that if you have reason to believe there's a "nice" solution, it's generally a *lot* quicker to make some educated guesses for a, b than it is to solve algebraically. (e.g. for this question you can spot what a, b must be in about 15 seconds just by guessing).
