Best laptop for around £400 - any suggestions?

Budget: £400 (can stretch to £500 if needs be)
The subject being studied: Medicine
Software that will be run on it: MS office, adobe reader, vlc player, Citrix reciever etc
Screen size: Ideally 12"-14"
Operating system preference: Windows 10
Battery life: The longer, the better
Minimum Ram requirements: 6-8GB
Minimum Storage requirements: 256SSD
Weight limit: 2kg
Will it be used for playing games?: Not really, except for occasional basic steam games
Touchscreen or stylus support needed?: Nah
Are there any specific port needs? (e.g. USB type C): HDMI
What current devices do you have? (including desktop, tablets and phone): iPad Air 2, iPhone 5s

Basically I want something fast and easy to carry around campus in my backpack, and that will be long lasting - this is important as I don't want the laptop to break after like a year of use! It needs to be comfortable enough to type up long essays / research papers and also enjoy a good netflix n chill sesh

I was thinking something like this, obviously this is a bit on the heavy side and it also has an optical drive which I don't really need:

Any ideas?

You want quite a lot for a budget laptop. Seems like you are after a Mac for 40% of the price.

Long lasting then you have to pay for quality and £400-500 is more in the Tesco value range.

If you use the search facilities on Amazon, saveonlaptops, BT Shop and ebuyer then that should give you a good idea of what you can get for your money.
You may not get a 256gb drive, 8gb or ultimate build quality for that.

I always prefer to check out computers irl to check the ergonomics plus read reviews.

This comes in at about your spec and price, although has some flaws.

I would buy an additional manufacturers warranty to cover repairs from the manufacturer direct. Even Apple go wrong.

Apart from the searches above, then i came across this. You cna look up more reviews yourself.

If you want better build quality then go for a Zenbook or Acer Swift 7 about £300 more on the Acer site.as they have £200 off at the moment.

You can also see what they have on Dell outlet. Also look out for any student discount.

PS those refurbished thinkapds arent a bad deal and if it develops a fault that is too expensive to repair then just buy another one at that price.

VLC I assume means you want to watch stuff on it?

Get a 14" screen, I mean 12" is just a joke.
