Big Ben Poems

with consternation bear™ has learned that Big Ben is being silenced for possibly four years....

please join with me in celebrating this landmark of our culture....

any format of poem will be accepted.




let's start with a haiku:



enormous great clock
bonging away all day long
your bells are massive

so Big Ben
the Luftwaffe barely dimmed your bongs;
the crack troops of Health & Safety
have breached your defenses

But are you a Ben?
Or is that just a perfunctory name,
The best they could think of, back then?

I have heard tales of you,
Since I was four,
Of your blessing noise,
Serenading the floor.

But no more, no more,
Your bongs are imbibed by the lands,
Silence must now fall,
From your emaciated hands.

you have watched over many parliaments
prime ministers have come and gone
starting with Palmerston
and now it is Theresa May
if you decide to speed up or slow down
then a man let us call him Dave
will add or remove a bun penny
from your pendulum
