I'd just like to know a few basic words! If you'd be able to tell me how to say the following, I'd much appreciate it

Goodbye.

Depends, you want the propper spoken bengali, i.e. bangla? Or do you want sylheti, a dialect very commonly used in east london parts.

I could swear thats a shanskirt word and not bangla, same with As'salaamwalaikum is arabic, but used to say hello. So depends if your speaking with a muslim or hindu bengali. A universal hello is 'Shagotom' am i right? :s-smilie:

I am hindu bengali, and i speak "pure" bengali and I'm from Calcutta, whatever that means....

And shagotom is right, but you say it, someone might smack you on the head with it. It's not common to say it. so if you see someone on the road you would say nomoshkar

Nomashkar/Namaste is a Sanskrit word, but loads of Sanskrit words are used in North Indian languages, just as Latin words are used in Romantic languages, or "As'salaamwalaikum" is used in Urdu. I've never heard of "Shagotom" though; perhaps it's a less formal/more secular kind of greeting.
if you've ever seen tim supple's "a midsummer nights dream" recently, they speak bengali (as well as sanskrit, malayalam and hindu)
its reallygood:smile:

If the bengali on the street is not a hindu, he will look at you funny.
