Taking my car to university....

i just want to know whats the deal with taking your car to university with you?

as i have quite a few commitments at home i would like to take my car to university so that i have my own independance and can easily get home on the weekends if i wanted to (well not so easily from edinburgh and glasgow...maybe then i wouldnt bother:p:)...

specifically im applying to glasgow, edinburgh, nottingham and bristol....i have heard somewhere that you can take your car to nottingham :s-smilie: (not sure about whether or not this is true)

any help appreciated guys!

i asked at bristol and they pretty much said no. there is not really any parking outside study areas. the centre of bristol is small anyway so walking or public transport int out of the question
most uni's have very limited parking, and if you're allowed to take your car at all then you will have to pay out for a permit.
if you ask me, a car is definately not worth it...too much money, you will become a taxi for your friends, always driving when you'd rather drink.
most uni's are in cities where public transport is really good. heck, i even get by in exeter and the buses are quite limited here, i still manage to get to the other side of town and back for my job whatever time of day it is.
Most unis discourage it for one reason or another. Not many places have great parking facilities- if any, and you usually have to pay to park at halls or whatever anyway.
Im not sure specifically about the unis you are applying to, but having a car in a city isnt always the best decision as a student.
If you just want it for getting home at the weekends though, by all means go ahead. I brought my car to uni, and just use it for food shopping and going home. To get to and from uni and into the city center I take the bus.
Depends what uni you go to, not only that but depends what halls in the uni you go to. My hall does not allow parking but one of the other halls which is far far away from mine...does.

yehh i think this would be the best plan....what do you do with your car in between? roughly how much is it for a permit to park?

You probably could take a car to Nottingham, as the vet school is at Sutton Bonnington and you would not be living on the main campus. Parking on main campus is not allowed at all, but as Sutton Bon is in the middle of nowhere I think a car might be a very useful thing.

I bought a parking permit and keep it in the halls carpark.
My permit cost £50 for the year, but im sure that will vary from uni to uni depending on availibility of parking.
When I went to visit the univertsity of Kent I was told their permit was £80 for the year.

People always question why brought my car, and it may sound like alot upfront, but it would cost me at the very least £30 for a return train journey home + bus fare to the train station, and a travel card from central london to where I live, so all in all about £40. It would also take about 4 hours+ in total that way, there would be limited luggage allowance etc. However, by paying that £50 upfront, it then only costs me £30 in petrol, take 2.5 hours, I can take as much luggage back as I want, shove it in the boot and not have to worry. It pays for itself in the long run basically

You don't think you should take account of the cost of insuring the car, having a tax disc etc. (which you could save if you left the car off-road at home)?

BARGAIN!! thats not bad at all imo, considering its for the whole year and youll have your own independance and can travel where you like! half the time buses dont go EVERYWHERE....so even if there is good public transport it might not be where you want to go...aaand they cost alot themselves!

But you don't have to pay all year round - just when you need it.

I wouldnt save any money because id still be taxing and insuring it as id still be driving it when I came home at weekends and at holidays. Id also want to keep my 2years no claims bonus, which you cant do if you are only insuring and stuff for on/off periods. So no, I dont think I should take that into consideration
is anybody actually considering the environment instead of their own lazy behinds when considering taking a car to uni?
if more people like you got the bus instead of driving so you can park right outside sainsburys as close to the door as you can get, then global warming wouldnt be half as bad.

i dont care about shopping with it...im more interested in using it to go home a couple of hundred miles every now and then...
what about all the people that use their cars everydayjust to go down the road 2 miles to get to work?

if everyone was that interested in making people use buses rather than cars to help the environment....i think people should work on making bus fares cheaper! theyre rediculous prices....

when i think about the distance i travel in my car...i dread to think how much it would cost on the bus all the time!

true, but two wrongs dont make a right, if we all went round with that "they're not doing it so why should i?" attitude then the world would be a mess of selfish ignorant people
if you're only going to use your car now and then, why not book in advance and get the train, its much cheaper and easier? theres no real reason that you need a car, apart from the fact you WANT it.

buses arent that bad if you're just going round town, and if they're too expensive then why not just WALK!? national express coaches for long distances are pretty cheap as well, cheaper than the petrol and the effort it would take you to drive yourself. megabus are even cheaper!

hmmm...thing is i dont really want to book in advance to just pop home on the weekend!

it probably isnt really cheaper to get the train....it costs about £25 for a return from here to swansea...only about 40 miles! cost me less than a tenner in petrol!

Nope. To be honest id rather have the close parking space and not have to carry 10 heavy shopping bags back to uni which is a 20minute, up hill walk away from the nearest supermarket & Frankly the other option of £3 for a 5 minute bus journey is ridiculous. Soooo until buses are virtually free, I get the same luxury and comfort of my own car, never have to sit next to anyone, and get a direct door to door service as and when I want it, I think ill keep my car.

AGREED!
itll make life easier i think....im not going to struggle/ blow loads of money on buses all the time, im sure just me not using my car will not make much difference to the environment at all...

yes ino someone will say 'what if we all thought like tht' but you still see PLENTY of cars on the road 24/7!

IMO.....the damage to the environment has already been done....taking cars off the road wont make it back to how it was before they were invented!
