Taking my car to university....

I decided not to take a driving test before I went to uni because I just don't see the point of having a car at uni and I would never be able to afford it. I have no problem with walking back from the supermarket or paying a few quid to get the train home to see my family. When I might stay with my parents for a couple of weeks, such as Christmas, I may need to take hom my computer and more clothes but my parents will happily drive up and give me a lift.

If you live in halls it will be very hard to get a permit to park on campus as priority will of course go to those who commute. Even in private accommodation it can be quite tricky. In my first year my housemate brought her car and literally only used it for travelling to and from home but she had to park it a few streets away from us as there are just too many cars. We live right in between uni and town so we get both students and tourists/shoppers parking in the streets.

IMO.....the damage to the environment has already been done....taking cars off the road wont make it back to how it was before they were invented!

I will never be a size 6 again but that doesn't mean I'm going to start stuffing my face and not try to lose weight just because I will never be the same as I was before I got lazy and starting drinking too much beer.

I really want to take my car for travelling to placements...

thats another thing i was thinking about :p:...i think depending on whether or not you NEED a car depends partly on the course you are doing and the travelling you need to do...

I mean, it'll be do-able by train, but car would be preferable. If I don't get a parking space though - I'll not let a little thing like needing to get a train every day ruin my shot at getting a degree lol ^^

If it were just for the convenience of coming home I wouldn't bother. I used to use train journeys to write essays actually, worked quite nicely  (and by write I mean scrawl terribly and type up the other side lol)

but you wont be doing placements, so you wont need a car!
everyone has to do the same amount of travelling as you when it comes to going home for weekend and holidays, and some even worse, what about internationals that cant just get the train or drive? if 90% of students can live without a car, then why cant you?

^^ im not sure youve seen what im applying for :p:...

for a veterinary course you have to have to have a total of 12 weeks Animal Husbandry experience and 26 weeks Clinical EMS...not many buses or trains run to farms in the middle of nowhere!

but you said you were gonna bring your car to use for going home at weekends?
you didnt say anything about placements.
fool.
i think its highly unlikely you will be doing placements in your first year anyway.
and if you're SO dead set on bringing a car, why did you waste everybody's time by starting up this thread?

thanks for your help!

...if ud read the start of the thread...i was wondering about what happens with the unis if i wanted to bring my car..their views on it...

Depends on the university.

I know if I went to Portsmouth and wanted to live in two halls, I would have to do so under the agreement that I wouldn't be bringing a car into the city.

Contrast this with some accommodation at Sheffield Hallam where they have parking spaces available....

i did read the start of the thread actually
going back to it, you also said...

"as i have quite a few commitments at home i would like to take my car to university so that i have my own independance and can easily get home on the weekends if i wanted to (well not so easily from edinburgh and glasgow...maybe then i wouldnt bother)..."

so where was the mention of placements?

idiot
i cant be bothered to argue about this, you are actually pathetic, and its because of millions of selfish single minded people like yourself that the environment is in the state that it is.

who said anything about arguing?? you began it...nothing made you read this thread or post anything on it....good day to you!

As said earlier permits for parking vary hugely. At my halls in Manchester last year it was £750 for a years parking or £5 a day.

And thats probably increased for this year

No one absolutely needs a car i have one mainly to get to and from work which is two buses and a tram ride away - doable but not very safe when you finish work at 10pm in a dodgy area of Salford!

Were those halls owned by the university L0RA? Or Unite or someone?

I would definitely have taken my car to uni if I hadn't have gone to London. My boyfriend took his last year to uni in Southampton and it makes life so much easier, being able to drive to Tesco's to do a shop and to drive home, instead of getting a 2 and a half hour train journey, then the tube, then a 20 minute train journey. I think his permit for halls was about £300 a year, and most of his flatmates had cars as well.

Wanting to take your car to university isn't at all selfish. At the end of the day, a valid question has been asked and I don't see the point in getting personal about it.

Anyway, OP: I'd just wait until you get a response from your universities and then email them. Some universities can't offer parking spaces for practical reasons, but some, like Nottingham may be able to do so. As a final note, none of us here know what commitments you may have, so I don't think anyone has the right to be judging you.

Hey just my input but looking over the threads arguing over what is the better price thought i would give a helpful link:

http://www.whatprice.co.uk/car/car-costs.html

some of the prices are outdated as car tax rose since this was made but also so has most other prices but in general a car costs 15.4p/mile or £1849 a year.

This is before fuel, cars are very costy i would very much like to take my car to uni so i can do any job in area, but a permit on top of that it's near £2000 a year running costs, i understand you may need it just a thing to take in to consideration though.

You won't gain NCB if you do on/off pay as you go inssurance but NCB you do have should not dissapear just keep proof of what you do have.

Back to the orignal question lol some uni ask more if you earn more, in general you should be able to find out what they charge on there website, hope this helps.
