A-level route/ AS grades and predictions confusion

Hi there, I am currently trying to rebuild my life after a long depressive episode and part of that means having to get A levels again since mine are too old

Obviously doing them as a mature student means predicted grades aren't really a possibility. I know it used to be you could sit AS examinations and that would give some independent indication of how you are performing but now it seems all exams are sat in one sitting.

Is there any possibility to sit exams to give an indication of how you are performing for applying to universities, or is the only option to complete them and then apply the next academic year with the results?
As a mature student you have an option to do an Access Course instead of A levels. Access Course are normally a year full time (2 part time) and most uni's accept them instead of A levels.
