I am trying to open a bank account with HSBC. I went to my local branch today and they told me that they would open an account for me, BUT with only the basics - no Switch card, no cheque book, no credit card. And they told me that my account would be monitored for a minimum of 6 months, until they felt that I could open a full account.

What in the world are they doing? Is this standard procedure? They're cheating me out of stuff like the 50 pound railcard rebate as well.

I really want to know how international students open accounts in the UK. I'm so stressed about it all..... ARGH.

Thanks btw to anyone who can help.

The deadline has passed for the railcard rebate.

HAve you had a bank account before? If not, this is standard practice with most banks. It sucks!

Yes I have, with other banks though, not HSBC. They've all been really nice to me, even when I was 11 then gave me a debit card. URGGGGH! It's quite ironic that my dad gets all this priority banking, powervantage VIP treatment at HSBC while I've got to suffer like this. Hehe.. Will wait it out then.
