Apparently u do not get to drop an alevel at the 2cnd year??

My school's the same: only let us choose 3 without dropping any (despite previous years picking 4 and dropping one in Yr13).

That is up to your school college.
Different schools have different policies
1. choose 3 subjects that you have to carry through the two years
2. choose 4 subjects but drop one around xmas
3. choose 4 subjects and drop one at the end of year 12
4. choose 4 subjects and continue them all to full A level.
5. chose a mixture of A level and BTEC level 3
