Hello,

I am an overseas student who is applying for P.h.D programs in the UK. I got my master's degree from the US. I have never had a course on writing a research proposal, and I tried to read extensively in the topic I am interested in and look up samples on how to write a good research proposal and follow the guide line that some schools have on their websites on how they expect you to write your proposal. However, I keep getting rejection letters and in one of them (from Southampton) they specified that my research proposal is not up to the academic standards of postgraduate students, I wonder if I can find trusted online service where I can have supervision on my proposal and get effective feedback on how to improve it in order to have a well-written proposal.

Any advice would be really appreciated

P.S. my area is Applied Linguistics

The first thing you need to do is sit down and have a look at where you want to study and with who. The contact them and ask if they'd be happy to take you on and work on a proposal together. Using an online service is not really going to help as they can provide generic guidance but may not be specialists in your field. It's good that you have some feedback for a start though.

I'm in this process right now and alleycat is right (as usual). I was TOTALLY stumped and one thing that helped me was to google research proposal examples for my area. From reading one, I got an idea of how one was supposed to go. When you have a proposal mostly together, I'd then reach out to professors to see if they're interested in your topic and they may help you perfect it. In my experience, professors want you to have done most of the work before coming to them with a proposal, then they'll help polish it.

This is good advice. See if any of the universities you're applying to have sample research proposals for your subject available. I was lucky enough to take a class on writing research proposals as part of my masters course, but my department had 3 successful proposal samples online which made the whole thing much easier (and also made it seem much more achievable).

Also, if you can get in touch with any current PhD students in your area and look at their proposals, that will be helpful too.
