Accommodation at De Montfort University

This thread is for advice, support or simply an honest opinion about accommodation at DMU, alongside answers to the most frequently asked questions we have.

There’s a lot of information out there, but if you can’t find what you’re looking for, we encourage you to ask as many questions as possible. Also, if you have already experienced living in Leicester, please share your experiences below!

1. What are the best things about living in Leicester?

One of the many advantages of studying at DMU is the City environment it is based in. Everything from Highcross, supermarkets, parks, entertainment venues and the city centre is all within walking distance.

DMU student: “The best thing about living in Leicester is that everything is close together. During my three years studying at DMU, I managed to stay living at home and walked in every day, justifying the city’s convenience. It kept me outside often, instead of being sat on a bus or train regularly”

2. Private Accommodation vs Halls of Residence?

First year students typically go for halls of residence in their first year. It usually acts as an all in one package, allowing students to familiarise themselves with living independently. Furthermore, second and third year students tend to decide upon private accommodation, locating themselves a bit further away and moving in with friends they made during their first year.

DMU student: “Living at halls in my first year was a great opportunity to meet other first years and it was a great experience during fresher’s week. Living in private accommodation allowed me to stay with the friends I made and felt much more independent”.

3. Which Halls of residence can I consider?
