Having visited Manchester on 5 or so occasions whilst my sister was there and interviews etc. I feel I am going to have to avoid EVERYWHERE!

On the walk back from my interview at UMIST to my sister's, i was half caught up in a chase with a couple of security guards and a few chavs/pikeys on a building site and an old sierra did a handbrake turn at speed next to me like an idiot - she lives 20 mins walk away! Maybe I just live in a sheltered environment.

yeah I've heard Manchester is pretty rough....I hope scallies stay the f*ck away from the uni campus and city centre or I'm going home
I am from one of the nicest places in Nottingham but do occasionally have to mingle with the low-life scum my city has to offer, I don't believe Manchester is worse than any other place similar. I think the main problem will be is that we will be living in crappy areas due to lower costs and we won't know very well where to avoid (compared to our home cities in which we do)

I would now give an example: "Nottingham has really bad press for gun crime, I have never experienced it" but then a pub near me had an armed robbery 2 nights a go and a post office about 6 months ago, all within 10-15 mins walk! However, I saw on the news today that in Moss side, police are not often wearing side arms! I thought the UK police didn't do that until now! :s-smilie:

May i ask where you're from? Also, which halls are you in? My sister was in Hulme Hall and it was dead rough there, her house in the 2nd year was also rough but I can't say I felt too scared, maybe that's ignorance! I am in Canterbury Court.
I'm from London...so I'll probably be one of the few people moving to a safer place when I go to Manchester

Manchester doesn't feel as rough as you make it out to be :| And I reckon I now live in the roughest area (Cheetam Hill)

So , best place to avoid is:

Cheetham Hill!

Though you'd never go there, ever ever ever, as students, because there's really nothing there and it's miles away from anytihng you'd want to go to. So all is good!

Enjoy Manchester guys, don't get caught up on the crime thing, just use your common sense it's fineeeeeeee.

Grr... the whole Manchester = crime thing slightly irritates me. Me and my flat mates made the most of being in Manchester while we were there. We were often out into the early hours, sometimes in less than well lit areas and came to no harm. We weren't mugged, the girls weren't date raped, we weren't spat at, and we didn't have any problems with anybody be them locals or not. And I even once made the mistake of jumping up and shouting in joy whilst in a pub when Man U were knocked out the Champions League!

And regards avoiding the worst places, we made a point of visiting them. First few days we went to Moss Side (at the time we thought it was the scary place to be, but we soon found out it wasn't that bad) and went to a local pub. We didn't offend anybody, and didn't give anybody dismissive looks... and we didn't get shot.

Don't be idiots and chances are you'll be just fine. If you are going to get hurt whilst you are out in Manchester, it'll most likely be when you fall over a curb whilst drunk.

A really nice and little known small area on the edge of Mapperley park ruined only by the fact the local school is Elliot Durham! The again, it's only a few minutes from all the gun crime so maybe I am overestimating it! Having said that, I went away for a few days and left my (non-central locking) car unlocked on the passenger (and in this case, pavement facing) side, nobody touched it
Oh and sorry Tednol if my few words were a bit offensive towards you and Manchester, I wouldn't really be spending the next 4 years there if I thought it was that awful! I just think people who maybe haven't experienced bad areas much should be aware...

What do you really expect? Yes there are lots of streets with guns flying off all the time

Manchester isn't that rough at all, for example I have walked through the city centre at 2:00-3:00am alone many of times and nothing has ever happened to me. I have got the night bus loads of times and everybody is happy mererly drunk nobody causes any problems.

In general the south of Manchester is posher and less rough and this where the university is. However in South Manchrester the rough parts are probably Moss Side, Longsight Fallowfield (yes no joke), Hulme and some rnadom council estates.

Fallowfield is dominated by students though and the rough part of Fallowfield (the Yew Tree Road estate area) is set back further from the university halls area. For this reasons the locals will never bother students although do avoid using cash machines round here at night.

Even rough areas such as Moss Side are not that bad, I go through Moss Side everyday on the bus and I have not once witnessed any incedents, I must have been through it about 10,000.

Now some areas you should avoud:

1) Beswick - My old college was near here and the area was quite scary, it is where all the proper scallies seem to live, you're fine going through the area on the bus or car but just don't stop off. The area is also very polluted

2) Clayton - Slightly nicer but still one of the poorer and rougher parts

3) Cheetham Hill - I have not had problems round here but it isn't a nice area.

Also avoid the area around Piccdilly Station late at night, it is on the way to places like Beswick and all the scallies hang out here.

Just a couple of tips where ever you are:

1) Don't use cash machines late at night especialy in Fallowfield
2) Don't do anything to annoy locals
3) If you're out in town at night try to keep in groups, I am local yocal so I know the city centre inside out, new students don't so keep in groups to keep safe.
4) If in the very unlikely to event you do get mugged, just give the theifts what you want and go straight to the police, if the incdent happened anywhere down Willsmlow Road is is likely to have been caught on CCTV. If you argue with these people they may beat you up.

i really havent felt unsafe in manchester, and i have been to quite a few areas with bad press (completely unintentionally, i get lost a lot). there have been a couple of incidents involving students, but i havent had anything happen to me. obviously if you are a knob and go looking for trouble, you will get it, and if you are not cautious with regards for your personal saftey you might be in danger. obviously some people take all the care they can and still get attacked or something, but this is rare and happens anywhere, not just manchester. and there isnt a really huge police presence or whatever but they are around, you do see them occasionally, i remember on a friday night in fallowfield there were a couple of mounted police hanging around the sainsbury's car park, the horses scared the crap out of me but it's nice to know they are there if something did happen.

like babyshambles, i feel more comfortable walking around manchester than i do at home, but then i do live in one of the roughest south london suburbs that is swarming with chavs.

but yes, didsbury is a very pleasant place.

Mancs and students, give me your top 10 of the roughest areas of Manchester that first years should avoid like the plague. I like the sound of Fallowfield and Didsbury no matter how expensive it is. Keen to hear responses and note humour will not be appreciated. Thank you!

I totaly forgot about Moston, a scary place I had to study Business Studies there. I know personaly of a lot of cases in Wythenshawe but then its a really big council estate (the biggest in Europe) so its not surprising. I suppose Strangeways kind of comes under Cheetham Hill I guess.
Ta!!! (that IS what Manconians say right?)

I think that originates Yorkshire. TA isn't really used that much in South Manchester as the population is very multnational and culturerly. The Withington ward which consists of Withington, Didsbury and Chorlton a lot of people in these areas were once students who were bought up in other parts of the country.

You will find a lot of the stereotypes not to be true in the university area however visit the towns such as Oldham or Stockport and you will find they do have quite strong northern accents.
I've been living in Manchester since the day I was born. Here, we say ''cheers'' rather than ''ta''. Don't ask me why.
Basically anywhere is safe as long as you keep yourself to yourself, but some places to keep a safe distance from are Hulme and Moss Side (two places closest to the uni site). Don't worry about places like Cheetham Hill and Ashton because you'l probably never go there anyway. Also Eastlands (where Manchester City is situated) can be dangerous at night.

Hulme is fine though and a lot of halls of residents are located here. I think the majority of humle is a safe area now and is mainly populated by young professionals and students. Moss Side is still very very mixed however.
