Uh I'm not 100% sure but when they just say "English", they mean English Language, as English Lit isn't compulsory in some schools, but English Lang is (for all schools). Sooo when you apply and they need a 6 from you in English, they mean they need to see a 6 in English Language.
My teacher told me that you can choose whichever English GCSE you got the best mark in to count as your 'English' grade. In most cases I don't think they are thaaat concerned, as either way you are able to write essays, whether that be about a text you have read before, or not. As you are going into a more scientific field, I'm sure that you would be able to simply put your 8 down. Well done, by the way, and good luck
