If you sign a register at certain times then yeah, however at some unis for some courses they will never do this, at other times they'll take it for everything you're supposed to attend. Though at the latter end of things they may not even care providing you're getting decent grades.

It depends. Some courses have a minimum attendance that you need to match every year (such as healthcare and medical courses), but then I assume that you'd have already been made aware of that.
Like another poster said, if you have to sign a register or check in with your ID card every time you attend a compulsory session, then attendance (or lack of) could easily be identified.
