I've applied to Glasgow for this academic year and am at a loss what to do about accommodation. Glasgow have offered me Murano halls, but I can't afford the £600 pre-payment required to accept the offer until my student loan comes in. Also, the lack of en-suite toilet and the consistently terrible accounts of appliances, repairs and basically anything that isn't social life is not appealing.

With the accept/decline deadline fast approaching, I've been looking at loan schemes, student banking overdrafts and also alternative accommodations. Firhill Court through Homes for Students is cheaper, a similar distance from campus as Murano, rated higher on Student Crowd, with en-suite and mostly importantly, the deposit is only £50.

However, there is a striking mix of reviews in terms of Firhill's quality, and confusingly, some reviews suggest the halls are run by a university and more expensive than standard accommodation.

Someone from who's stayed in Firhill or Murano help ASAP? I'll likely end up in Firhill because of timing but I'd like to know what I'm getting into.

I know nothing about Firhill, but I checked out Murano on the open day and it seemed to be an absolute hole tbh.

Where did you stay in the end and do you recommend it?

I moved into Firhill Court about a week ago and honestly I think it's too early to say. I really like it here so far, I get on with my flatmates well and I think it's good value for money compared to Murano.

Apparently there's also a free gym membership when you go with any of the university of Glasgow halls, so that's maybe where the extra £52/month in Murano goes.

Though tbh, the luxury of double beds is something I really, really enjoy at Firhill, and though the bathroom is small, it is better than a shared bathroom, especially when it is cheaper. The staff are also lovely here, though maybe that's because my mum amused them all before I arrived.

I think why Firhill is cheaper when it has better facilities is that you are obligated to stay in the halls up to 2 months longer than uni halls. That suits me fine but being tied down like that isn't for everyone.
