heeellloooo everybody. i'm in my first year at cardiff uni and thinking of moving into cambrian point next year, so i'm just looking for any comments on it really: what it's like, good sides, bad sides etc...
It's very nice. Peaceful enough, yet not dead and not an inconvenient location at all. The rooms and all seem to be pretty cool too. A few friends of mine stayed there last year, and having visited them, several people I know are now living there and loving it
The postcode is CF24 4HJ, I suggest going to google maps/yahoo or something and looking it up on there, it's on a road called 'Maindy Road' to help you pinpoint the location a bit further.
From the main uni building I would say its about 15 minutes if that, depends on walking pace. I am lucky because I get to walk 25 minutes everyday, as my building sucks and is miles away! Town is about 20-25 minutes away!
I haven't had any problems as yet; the fire-alarm has gone of twice since I have been here in my block - very good!!! (since september 07, a record for students I bet!)
The Kitchen and living space could do with being slightly bigger, but they are of a decent size!
The only thing I would recommend is possibly bringing a bit of extra storage facilities, like hanging shelves for inside your wardrobe!
Also, when do you have to apply for private halls to definitely get a place there?
I applied for my place at the end of June, and have secured a place for september. Bear in mind there's a £200 deposit (half refundable) and first installment of something like £1100 has to be paid in mid September (which is before the student loans and stuff come through I think....eek! )
I lived in Cambrian during 2009/2010 (my final year at uni) and found that the main problem I had was the affect moving out had on my deposit.
Location wise it was about 15min walk for me from Cambrian to the Business school or Humanities, 45mins to town, 20-30 mins to Tesco Extra.
Fairly quiet, you do get the odd 'flat parties' and loud bass music coming in from somewhere.
Maintenance... well, I told them that the phone wasn't working and they didn't do anything about it. The extractor fan in the kitchen was broken and they didn't do anything about it. The only thing they seem to fix is when the flush isn't working or when the shower decides that no water is coming out.
In winter, depending on your room, it can get cold. The radiator in the room does very little in warming the room up.
20p for 20mins of the tumble dryer (if I remember correctly), clothes will probably dry after 45mins in the dryer. By the way, think it was £1.50 for one cycle of the washing machine.
Before you move out you have to book a 'room inspection'. I was too busy to book a 'room inspection' before I moved out (and had already moved out about a month before my contract finished anyway) so I didn't know that you have to return your key by a certain time before the end of your contract, (for me I think it was 10am) so when I arrived at Cambrian around midday to return my key I was told that I had to pay for an extra night -fair enough.
Late room inspection - I was the first person to move out, haven't been in Cambrian for about a month, good old flatmates didn't clean the communal areas therefore I was billed for (communal area): black carpet, walls need repainting, hallway needs hoovering, oven needs cleaning, work surfaces need a wipe-over, kitchen floor needs cleaning. (O_O) I just looked at the guy and said "I hope you're not going to make me pay for all this cos I haven't been living here for a while!" and only then did he make a note that there were 4 other people living here and haven't moved out yet > (why not call it 'flat inspection' instead?)
Though what really irks me is the fact that the flat isn't 120% clean and tidy before you move in anyway and isn't the money taken from your deposit supposed to be used for tidying the place up before the next lot move in? (O_o) Crockery, pots and pans were left in my flat from previous residents, my friend's desk was just a 'graveyard of flies' because somebody had left the window open throughout the summer.
And it might just be my room but my wardrobe was damp water was literally seeping through the carpet (O_O)
Oh and if you want a look at the list they use for the room inspections drop me a line or something as I still have mine (-_-)"
Well, considering it's in an area most convenient only for Cardiff uni, I think it has mainly, if not solely, Cardiff uni students.
A lot of people who go to Glamorgan live there (long walk, but I expect they get the bus), there's a few Royal Welsh College people (most of them live in Severn Point or else in privately rented houses) and it's not that far from the main UWIC campus (again, I expect there's a bus)...
If any one is interested in staying in Cambrian point starting in september 2010, in a single ensuite room for 52 weeks please contact me! Due to unexpected exam results i can no longer take this room, but won't get back my money unless i can find someone to replace me in this room! Thank you.
