Why clearing open till October? And uni application?

Why does Clearing stay open till late October 2017 for 2017 entry to university. I thought all university courses started in September. How can any courses still have places by October?

Also, can you apply to a university through clearing that you didn't apply to through your university choices via UCAS?

Only the poorer universities will have clearing open that long.

The answer to the first point I can tell you entirely, but many courses start in October and it may be a different term entry,

1) Not all courses start in Sept. Some courses also admit late arrivals, especially home students who don't need to sort out a visa.
2) Yes. You can use clearing to apply to any uni that has places, not just those you applied to in the main cycle.
