They were asking a quite specific question about prestige.

Please define 'prestige'.

Old buildings? Lots of girls with long hair and a posh accent? 'My grandma has heard of it'?

Its a totally meaningless word in this context, and a totally useless concept for choosing a University.

You missed my point. You are presupposing OP was looking for definitive advice on which universities to apply to.

The question actually posed was which universities in the Russell Group are the best and worst for law (three best and three worst). That hardly sounds like someone asking advice on which student union has the best indie rock nights, but rather sounds like someone asking about prestige. You have entirely invented a context in which prestige is meaningless.

This debate is always a bit like which is the best sportscar to buy. The big names will always be up there, namely where they can (and do) invest huge amounts of money into R&D, recruiting the best staff (or students) and marketing to maintain their brand.

And any opinion on which are the best/worst, are usually influenced by that.

The thing I find interesting with these posts is that they rarely give an explaination as to why they are the "best" or "worst".

What you're saying sounds quite eloquent, but it's pseudo-profound. The question is not "which is the best sports car" but more "is this a sports car". There is a bit of grey area, but I could tell you a Lambo is and a Ford Escort isn't. Similarly, it's axiomatic that Oxbridge and LSE are the most prestigious courses -- looking at how hard it is to get in and the calibre of academics at the institutions and the destinations of the graduates from those institutions.

Which is better, Oxford or Cambridge? is the best sports car equivalent.

Top 'Ivy League' Universities: Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, LSE, Imperial, possibly Edinburgh
Next level: Bristol, Durham, Manchester, KCL, most of RG
Bottom RG level: QUB, Liverpool, Sheffield, York

Leeds?

If you think things are this simplistic, and can be boiled down so easily, maybe Law isn't for you!

Absolutely. This site is so f depressing sometimes.

Plus I wasn't trying to be profound - this is TSR we are talking about.

LOL - do I detect a whimsey of weariness, there, J?

Would it have been better if I had said "what are the best three and worst three sports cars to buy?"

Plus I wasn't trying to be profound - this is TSR we are talking about.

It is axiomatic that Oxbridge is the best in terms of prestige, so it's really a false comparison. Hence pseudo-profound.

Goes to Google translate....

Edit - I'll ignore the third best and third worst part then. But to be fair I don't know enough about sports cars. I just would have thought there would easily be as identifable as the very best sports cars, like you say Oxbridge is.

I don't either. I impressed myself by knowing "Lambo".

I was trying to back out of this thread in about the 10th post and now I find myself debating the semantics of "best" and "sports car". Anyway I don't think the comparison worked.
Why do people rate Liverpool so low ?

I am surprised that hasn't come across before and far less whimsy like

It probably has the lowest entry requirements of all the Russell Group.

People still use that as a pretty strong marker of how good a uni is unfortunately.

Very disappointing people would use that as a sole marker for excellence.

I rate Durham

Based on what ?

I agree. I think the top universities should create a new group to truly rival the Ivy League.

It is funny how a University can be in the Russell Group but not be found in the top 100 universities in the world.

It will be good to have the Big 8, which are Cambridge, Oxford, UCL, Imperial, Manchester, LSE, Edinburgh, Kings College London.

There's too many universities on a similar level to truly have a top 8.
You could argue KCL/Manchester could be replaced with any one of Warwick/Bristol/Durham

If you only saw the unedited posts before I post them. They clearly go through a filter so it is audience appropriate for TSR before I post them. I'd probably be banned if that filter didn't exist.

I washed my filter at too high a temperature, and now it's got ruddy great big holes in it. Everything falls through...
We come back to the fundamental problem in this thread : what exactly do any of you mean by 'best' and how would you measure it?

Yeah, i agree. That was why i argued that it should be a self-selected group.

Warwick, Bristol and Durham are definitely decent. However, to rival Ivy League, i would only put the original 8 mentioned.

That is: Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, Imperial, Manchester, Kings College London, Edinburgh, LSE

Exactly the same. I'd prefer to post what I really think, but I wouldnt be long for these forums.
