Can I study Archaeology with these subjects?

Hi all,

I'm looking at studying archaeology but I'm wondering whether my current subject choices are appropriate.

A Level: History
BTEC: Media
BTEC: ICT/Business (undecided)

My school has a strange new entry system for sixth form this year and according to said entry system I can only do one A Level.

If you could also give me some advice or guidance I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks.

Hi there,

You will likely be fine for a BA Archaeology degree, but most still recommend some more relevant subjects.

E.g. A background of studying both arts and science subjects can be helpful to students in completing the course, although there are no specific subject requirements for admission. We expect you to have taken and passed any practical component in your chosen science subjects.

Also, some universities won't accept BTECs.

Personally, I think you need to take at least one more relevant A-Level, especially if you want to do a BSc degree. Ask your school about this. I would recommend Geography or Biology but then again, I know people who have done much less relevant subjects. If you want to do a BA then you should be fine but you need to check that your chosen universities accept BTECs. When you write your Personal Statement you will likely be unable to draw upon what you will learn in Media or ICT/Business as a justification for wanting to study Archaeology, so be sure to do some extra reading or get some digging experience.

Best of luck!

Some Uni's don't accept BTEC's but I have found when I went looking around different Uni's for Archaeology most admissions teams were perfectly okay with it. I did a BTEC in Medical and Applied Science and an A-level in Psychology and I got offers from all 5 of my uni choices. I would say because you aren't doing anything sciencey per say that you're better off doing the BA in Archaeology.
