Going into year 12 - want to do History&Politics at uni

Hi there,
I'm going into year 12 and I think I'd like to do History and Politics at university. I was wondering if anyone has any advice for the sort of reading and extra curricular activities I could be doing to prepare for a competitive application (to somewhere like Oxford).
It helps if you have discovered what studying these subjects as an academic subject is all about, and some of the theory stuff you will have to grapple with.

This is really good book that explains what 'Historiography' is - 'how we study History' - and is really easy to read : https://www.amazon.co.uk/Studying-History-Palgrave-Study-Skills/dp/1403987343/

And a similar book for Politics : https://www.amazon.co.uk/Introduction-Politics-Robert-Garner/dp/0198704380

You dont need to buy these new - you can get them as inter-library loans from your local library or you can buy them 2nd-hand on ebay, oxfam books etc

Dont worry too much about 'hobbies' - more important is that you mention some issues that interest you - and why.
