In the new a level (edexcel), there are three papers.
In Papers 1 and 2 (Micro and Macro), you get three main styles of question.
-Short answers (e.g. definitions, calculations, sketching graphs, multiple choice)
-Mid range answers. Based on data or sources you'll tend to get 4,5 or 6 markers in which you would write at least a half/two thirds of a side (similar to the 6 markers in GCSE science)
-Longer answers (10, 20 or 25 marks). These are essays. A ten marker would require at least a side. A 20 or 25 marker would require at least two sides.
Both require all three types of question but micro has fewer longer answers and more short answers than macro (in my end of year 12 mock, there was only one micro long answer (20 marks) but for macro there was both a 10 and a 20 marker).
Paper 3 (which contains both micro and macro) only includes the mid range and longer answer questions.
So yes there is essay writing, but there are shorter questions as well.
