Load of chaps doing nursing - however - and I do not want to put you off - look at the NMC website - latest hearings....... the amount of male nurses who are struck off for kiddy porn. August was a particularly abundant month - and again I do not want to put you off - we need chaps

As long as the OP isn't in to this sort of porn, they have nothing to worry about so I don't see why this is relevant.

You're talking complete rubbish, you're seriously saying that universities and the general public think that all male nurses are paedophiles? Of course they don't.

Of course I am not. My son is a physics teacher and if you look at the papers - apparently all male teachers are child molesters. According to the NMC - and look at it - you evidently haven't - many male nurses look at child pornography. It only takes one bad apple.

I was discussing this with my son last week. He said that sometimes pupils get a bit teary when they arrive at school. ( He taught at a top boarding school for two years) He said you cannot comfort them because of safeguarding issues - he leaves that to the women - and one of his female colleagues was struck off for seemingly being to close to pupils as a result.

All it takes is one nurse and there are quite a few male nurses who are inappropriate - look at the NMC for August and get back to me.

For the record I am a very senior nurse working with three wonderful male nurses who I would defend to the end of my days
oh for pity sake. i thought this type of thinking had died in the 1980s. then when i started training it was we where all puffs oddly out of the 3 male student two of us where married with kids. the other was gay. but big deal. so now im a kiddy fiddler great. males can be caring without predatory reasons. any nurse or student that thinks like that has serious issues. we are meant to be un judgemental . obviously anyone guilty of child abuse or viewing images deserves what they get. oh look female nurses abusing elders. does that mean you are. of course not it a stupid concept.
I work in a children's hospital and there are loads of male nurses who do a fantastic job. Granted, more females tend to take the course than males, but it is definitely not uncommon to have a male nurse and id say if you want to do it, go for it!
The comment above about male nurses being struck off is completely irrelevant in this case and i'm not sure why it was even brought up, so don't let that put you off.

I saw a male nurse working in the A&E department during my work shadowing placement. He was very professional withh his work and I admired how he bucked the trend and he was much taller than me. I also saw another male nurse in the colonoscopy department. So it really is not as rare as you may think it is. Do not be afraid to pursue your passion irrespective of your gender. It's perfectly fine.

So the OP asks about entering nursing as a male and you respond by saying, "...look at the NMC website - latest hearings....... the amount of male nurses who are struck off for kiddy porn." and "there are quite a few male nurses who are inappropriate"

If a female student were to ask you about entering nursing, would your first response be, "I don't want to put you off, but - look at the NMC website - latest hearings....the amount of female nurses who are struck off for elder abuse" and "there are quite a few female nurses who are inappropriate"?

Your comments are quite extraordinary. Not only is "kiddy porn" your first thought, but you go on to defend it with comments such as "mud sticks" and "there is this assumption" (in your mind, clearly there is).

Speaking as a male nurse, if you were my manager, I would be seriously concerned that this is the first thought that comes into your head when you think of male nurses. Hell, you're not my manager, and I am still seriously concerned.

I've worked as a male nurse for 35 years. As you can see, even within the profession, there are apparently still some people who find it difficult to see a man in a nurse's uniform without thinking, "Kiddy porn". But thankfully, they are a minority, and I have never been aware of being discriminated against or looked down upon for my gender. The only complaint I might have had was in my student days being the one always called upon to do the heaviest lifting or to "sort out" the most aggressive patients. As soon as I pointed out that this was a tad silly, it would stop. In fact, as a male nurse, I suspect that I often got more respect than my female colleagues - "He's a man, he must be in charge" kind of thing. So I still benefited from The Patriarchy!

As a general nurse, I tended to be in a minority of about 10%, but when I moved into mental health nursing, the proportion of male nurses is much higher. There is also a greater representation of males in senior nursing roles. Overall, I would have no concerns about being a male nurse - it's just as hard and just as rewarding for us as it is for females, and you spend all your time working with - well, human beings.

really well said
Hi guys - just a reminder to please keep this thread civil and useful to the OP.

Any further unsuitable references or off topic discussion will be removed.

Thanks!
sorry. but it something male nursing has had to deal with since we where allowed to be nurses. its only been 66 years since we were allowed to be on the main register. yes there are gay male nurses and straight ones. what maters is that the person caring for you male female or no gender has your care and well being at heart. if your male and able to do that great. if your female great if your neither and can do it great.

I have read many articles and comments about nursing and i see that there are more male adults (ages: 28 onward) studying to become nurses than more younger males (age:18-20). Is this true??

Hi Lauren, its that my real choice was to go into Business management and HR but my parents and family friends where like that area has a lot of competition to get a job, while in nursing you get into a job straight away after graduating and u can contine climbing the ladder( Band 5,6,7) or u can specialize in one area(thinking about Nurse Anesthetist)
