Matriculation - what to wear?

Matriculation....sounds kinda painful!

Ok so its easy for the males here, all they need to wear is a suit! How about us girlies though. "Very smart dress" could be a world of things :P
I was just wondering what everyone is planning to wear: black skirt, white shirt with a black jacket? A similar kind of suit of a different colour/material? A dressing gown?

I just don't want to be the odd one out on the day :P Over to you!

Right well, I'll tell you what me and my housemates wore...I wore a black pinstripe trouser suit with a red jumper and red shoes, one of them wore a black cocktail dress and a pretty pink necklace, all the others wore black/grey/navy skirt suits, shirts black/purple/blue/white and heels as far as I can remember. Our college recommended you bring a suit, or else something else equally smart. At most most of the colleges you have to wear a gown though, so I don't imagine anyone can see much of what you are wearing underneath. Which college are you from? Most people will be too hungover to care anyway, being in the middle of freshers week!

As far as I can remember (which is almost nothing to be fair!) from last year, us lot at Grey had our Freshers photo after Matriculation so you'll need to look good!

Actually, I think our Fresher's Photo was a different day. Oh well, just ignore that!

Our freshers photo was straight after matriculation, I know that.

At Hild Bede this year certainly, the photo is before matriculation. Photos at 10.15 am during Freshers is just cruel.
Do you reckon I should buy a suit then?

Do you have a nice dress you can wear instead? I've worn my suit 4 times last year, once for matriculation, and three times when I was doing stuff for DSU, it's up to you, but it will come in handy.
Okie, seems like I'll have to bring my suit. It's pretty tacky, but I guess it will do

Just like last year then. Let's just say some of the people on the photo are not looking their best, and some just aren't on the photo .
OK, stupid question, but by suit do you mean skirt shirt and jacket? or no jacket...?

I am determined to be in that photo, even if it kills me. I went in for a whole school one, one year, even though I had the flu and hated the school. Not missing the HB one. And to be fair, if the hungover look is what is captured of me, it is not going to be a completely unrepresentative picture of me in general.

Aw thankyou
I wasn't planning on that! By Freshers week I'm sure you'll be totally Valenised and will be doing it whether you want to or not. Then I can point and laugh at you

Well, at least there is a little bit of distance between your colleges. You might be able to hold out a bit better once actually in Durham.

Thanks for all of the invaluable info so far  You've all been a great help. I just have to go out and buy the blasted suit now :P

Any hints on what happens in the actual ceremony? :P

Hmm that is very true. Lets hope there isn't a Durhamwide epidemic though!

The vice chancellor makes a speech about welcoming you to a historic/prestigious/etc institution. A representative from each of the JCRs comes to the front and signs something I think.

I was stuck behind a pillar, so didn't get a view of what was actually going on at the front. The worst part is the smell, as almost no-one washes that morning being too hungover, and some unlucky people are sick on their gowns on the way over to the cathedral.

Collingwood don't wear gowns until graduation (and I'm sure its not the only one) so its either don't be sick or bust for me!
