which careers give the most pay?

The one that you enjoy, so can stand to do for 40+ hours a week for almost 50 years.
Medicine and high ranked politics and status in media.

Not much else really tops that unless you set up your own successful business.

How about engineering and law?
Top software developers
Investment bankers
Derivatives traders
Getting lucky with a business idea

Bear in mind though that the big salaries here go to extraordinary people, not just people who chose the right career. You'll probably not be one of those extraordinary people if you just pick a career because you want a lot of money.
Software Engineers at organisations like Facebook/Google are paid pretty well.
A top job in media.

Sky news presenters reportedly get paid hundreds of thousands

Barristers and lawyers can get paid a lot, especially corporate lawyers.
But what is the point of being paid £100,000 a year if you hate every hour of your job? Go for something you enjoy and develop that.
