Medicine Grades

Hey does anyone have any idea what the average grades are like at Liverpool for Medicine? I know the minimum grades required are about AAB but do most people there have straight As, 3As or higher? What's the lowest grades you know of there? Thanks

I'm going into first-year medicine in Liverpool in a couple of weeks. I'm not sure about other medical applicants, but when I applied I had:

A - A-level Maths
A - AS Biology
A - AS Chem
B - AS Eng Lang

Once I got through the interview and was accepted, Liverpool said I needed to achieve AB in Biology and Chemistry (in any order) for my conditional offer.

Judging from this, I'm guessing that the typical offer is AAB (for me, the third A already came from my maths). At the same time though, I would highly recommend that you aim for AAA in your AS-levels, because even with my AAAB I was only accepted into one of my four UCAS choices.

Plus, if you already have AAA in AS-level, meeting the AAB A-level conditional offer will be that much easier.

Yikes, I only have AABB at A-level (i'm post a-level) Where else did you apply to apart from Liverpool and what & how much work experience did you do? Thanks for the reply

Then surely you've satisfied their (and most other medical school's) typical offer?

Yeah but look at that guy's grades! If he only got 1/4 of his choices, they might be looking for people with straight As or something I have no idea!

- Sorry for the late reply -

I didn't mean to scare you when I told you my grades. The other thing I forgot to mention was that I'm an OVERSEAS applicant, which means the criteria for people like me is generally higher.

When you apply through UCAS, make sure you have a nice range of schools. Go to The Times Good University Guide for medicine and make sure you select a broad range of universities. When I applied, I picked my four like this:

Cambridge (a "reach" university) - rejected
Manchester (a "good-fit" university) - rejected
Liverpool (a "good-fit" university) - accepted
Cardiff (a "safety" university) - waitlisted*

With my AS grades, extra-curricular involvements and hospital experience, I felt I could try for the "higher-end" universities, which is probably why I only made it into 1/4 of my choices.

The only real surprise for me was how my safety uni waitlisted me, but on the condition that I held no other offer from any other university for medicine (which I had, so I was effectively rejected).

Seriously though, with AABB you definitely stand a good chance for medicine. Like hihihihi said, AABB > AAB, so you fit the bill.

Plus, grades aren't all unis look for; they look at your interview performance, your school report, your extracurricular involvements, your personal statement and your hospital experience.

I'd be more than happy to tell you about my application details, but I don't think it would help since I was an overseas applicant and had to fight through a tougher pool of applicants than what you'll have to face.

If your're serious about medicine though, check out a book called "Learning Medicine" by Peter Richards and Simon Stockill. It's an excellent book written for A-level or post-A-level medical applicants like you and me, and it offers invaluable advice on the application process and on what to expect as a med-student and as a doctor. Very highly recommended!

the standard offer for Medicine at Liverpool is AAB, like any other uni. most people tend to get AAB, however there are those who jsut miss out on their offer, and can get let in with ABB, AAC (depending on subjects) etc. not very common though. there's also those who get 5A's 4A's of course. one of my friends actually got an offer from Liverpool of BBB though, because they loved her so much.

must warn you though, out of some of my friends who are at Liverpool doing medicine, just because they got straight A's it doesn't mean they have an easy time with the course...most of them found it quite hard work, and a lot of people failed the odd module here and there....luckily you'll get the chance to do a summer resit though
I know it's a longshot, but it's really bothering me right now:

Those who have been accepted/are applying/know of people applying or who have been accepted by Liverpool - what were your GCSE grades for Medicine?

Thanks

I was accepted for Dentistry, which has an almost identical application procedure to Medicine, with 4 A's, 6 B's and 2 C's

In terms of a Level grades, Liverpool are known to lower there offer if you give an exceptional performance at the interview, but at that the grades would be lowered to ABB at the very least. Also, given that most uni's both dental and medical, are upping there entrance criteria by a grade, the minimum for medicine at Liverpool will now probably be AAB.

No, they have typical offers of AAB or ABB because that's what they expect their applicants to achieve. Most applicants get in by satisfying those grades whether they get borderline AAB or AAAA.

That's nice to know. I got 3A*'s and 1.5 A's with the rest B's... It's annoying how I fail to meet the minimum requirements of so many universities.

2 of my mates are at Liverpool right now doing medicine. One got AAB, and the other AAA. They both got in (requirement is AAB).

St andrews told me that they wanted around 7 A's at GCSE, with Birmingham and Sheffield asking for 8. The London med schools, with the exception of Barts, told me that they wanted more and then there's the med schools that ask for more in their prospectus's. All in all I failed to meet the requirements of a large chunk of med schools.

I've been made an AAB offer from Liverpool. I'm predicted AAAB and got AABB at AS, and I've had three interviews (which led to two offers and a rejection) so I don't think that not being predicted straight As or having perfect ASes is a problem as long as your predicted grades are mainly As.

Hey ahneta, where is your other offer for? Where did you get the rejection from and did that interview go a lot worse than the others? (if u don't mind me asking) Also were they friendly at liv?
My girlfriend is a 1st yr medic at Liverpool and got AABB
